Chapter 13 - The Mission Marcus Chose to Fail

Marcus had been ordered to destroy Meridian’s ledger.
Not recover it.
At the time, he believed the ledger contained compromised identities whose exposure could endanger hundreds of people.
Then he saw it.
It wasn't merely identities.
It documented bribes.
Illegal surveillance.
Shell companies.
Politicians.
Defense contractors.
Senior officers.
Judges.
And operations intentionally compromised for profit.
Including Aaron’s.
Marcus refused to destroy it.
That made him a liability.
Shaw arranged his death.
Marcus survived because someone pulled him from the burning facility.
“Who?”
He looked toward the frozen image of Eleanor.
“My mother-in-law.”
I stared.
Mom had saved Marcus.
She knew he lived.
“Since when?”
“Since the night I disappeared.”
The betrayal landed differently now.
Not malicious.
Still devastating.
“You let me grieve.”
“Elena—”
“You both let me bury you.”
“If Shaw believed you knew, she would have taken you.”
“You keep saying that like it makes the choice yours.”
He had no answer.
Good.
Love did not erase what he had done.
We went to the archive facility with federal tactical support outside Shaw’s command.
Raymond led us to a hidden vault.
Eleanor surrendered immediately.
Inside, we found the ledger.
But several drives were missing.
Raymond swore they had been there.
Then Harrison appeared.
Alone.
“How did you find us?”
Nobody had told him the location.
Mom looked at him.
Forty-one years of marriage seemed to collapse in one glance.
“Harrison.”
He raised his hands.
“I can explain.”
I almost laughed.
Of course.
Then Marcus drew his weapon.
“Don't move.”
My father stopped.
From his coat pocket came a small transmitter.
Military encrypted.
Shaw’s network.
Mom began crying.
“You never stopped.”
Dad looked at her.
“No.”
Then at me.
“But not for the reason you think.”
He had remained inside Meridian for seventeen years.
Not loyal to Shaw.
Not entirely.
He claimed he was the source feeding evidence to federal investigators.
“Prove it.”
He gave me a code phrase.
Colonel Cole verified it through a compartmented channel.
Harrison was registered as an intelligence asset.
My father had been telling the truth.
At least this time.
Then the lights died.
Emergency red illumination filled the vault.
Marcus shouted:
“DOWN!”
The vault door slammed shut.
A speaker activated.
Rebecca Shaw’s voice.
“Thank you, Harrison.”
Dad’s face collapsed.
She had followed his transmitter.
He hadn't betrayed us intentionally.
May you like
But he had brought her directly to the ledger.
Then smoke began pouring through the ventilation system.
