Chapter 11 - The Man Wearing My Husband’s Shape

Facial reconstruction exposed prosthetic alteration.

The funeral watcher wasn't Marcus.

Someone wanted surveillance systems to identify him as Marcus.

Why?

To manufacture evidence that Marcus was alive before he was ready to surface.

Blackmail.

Leverage.

Confusion.

Then Colonel Cole found something.

The burner calls attributed to “Aaron” originated through an old military voice-modeling project.

Project LANTERN.

Authorized seventeen years earlier.

Supervising officer:

Rebecca Shaw.

But one civilian technical adviser was also listed.

Harrison Pierce.

My father.

I called him.

He didn't deny it this time.

Before becoming the quiet retired father I knew, Harrison had been an acoustic engineer on defense contracts.

He helped build early voice replication systems.

“You could have told me.”

“I signed secrecy agreements.”

“You've spent thirty-four years hiding behind that sentence.”

Then came the worse question.

“Did you create Aaron’s voice?”

Dad cried.

“Yes.”

My knees weakened.

“For Shaw?”

“At first.”

After Aaron disappeared, Shaw asked Harrison to create a model from archived recordings, supposedly to lure foreign contacts.

Years later, Harrison realized it was still being used.

He tried to expose it.

That was when Meridian threatened our family.

His cruelty toward my career suddenly had another dimension.

He had spent years pushing me away from sensitive assignments.

Not because he thought I was weak.

Because he knew something was hunting through our family.

But explanation was not absolution.

“You still put me in a garage.”

“I thought if I treated you like you were insignificant, Raymond would believe I knew nothing.”

“You could have told me privately.”

“I was afraid.”

“So was I.”

Silence.

That ended the argument.

Then Marcus asked Harrison one question.

“Who can operate the Aaron model now?”

Dad answered:

“Shaw.”

“Anyone else?”

Long pause.

“Yes.”

“Who?”

“Eleanor.”

My mother.

I stared at the phone.

“Mom?”

Harrison whispered:

“She helped record Aaron’s childhood speech archive.”

That did not mean she was involved.

Then my burner rang.

Aaron’s synthetic voice.

This time I answered without speaking.

The voice said:

“Elena, your mother has Raymond.”

Marcus and I looked at each other.

May you like

The caller continued:

“And she wants to trade him for you.”
