Chapter 12 - My Mother’s Thanksgiving Confession

Eleanor was gone.

Federal agents found her phone abandoned at the house.

Victoria was inconsolable.

I wasn't.

Not yet.

Something didn't fit.

Mom had spent months secretly helping Marcus.

She stole the photograph before Harrison and Raymond could find it.

Why suddenly become Meridian?

Then a secure video arrived.

Eleanor.

Raymond sat tied to a chair behind her.

Alive.

Terrified.

“Baby,” Mom said.

Her voice shook.

“I’m sorry.”

“Where are you?”

“I can’t tell you.”

“Did you take Raymond?”

“Yes.”

Victoria screamed beside me.

Mom continued.

“He knows where Shaw keeps the original Meridian ledger.”

Raymond shouted:

“I DON'T!”

Mom slapped him.

I had never seen her strike anyone before Harrison.

Apparently Thanksgiving was broadening horizons.

“Mom, release him.”

“No.”

“Why?”

“Because I made this mistake seventeen years ago.”

The real story finally emerged.

Aaron discovered Meridian’s corruption before anyone else.

He tried to expose Shaw.

Eleanor helped him escape.

Not Harrison.

Mom.

She provided money, documents and access to the voice-modeling project.

Then Aaron was killed.

She knew because she saw his body.

Harrison never did.

For seventeen years, Mom pretended to believe he might be alive because Shaw threatened Elena if she spoke.

“Why didn't you tell Dad?”

“Because Harrison was still working for Shaw.”

My father went silent.

Mom looked directly into the camera.

“I never knew whether he stopped.”

Harrison whispered:

“Eleanor…”

She began crying.

Their marriage had not been forty-one years of shared secrets.

It had been two frightened people independently lying to protect the same children while gradually destroying the family they meant to save.

Then Raymond broke.

“I know where the ledger is!”

Everyone froze.

He confessed Meridian used one of his investment funds to purchase an abandoned bank archive facility.

The ledger was stored offline there.

Shaw wanted it destroyed.

Eleanor wanted it exposed.

“Address.”

Raymond gave it.

Marcus stared at the map.

“I know that building.”

“How?”

“It was the final location in my mission orders.”

The place where Marcus supposedly died.

Everything was returning to the beginning.

Then Eleanor leaned toward the camera.

“Elena, don't come.”

“Mom—”

“Marcus knows why.”

I turned.

My husband looked devastated.

“Marcus?”

He whispered:

“There’s something about my death I still haven't told you.”

“What?”

“The mission wasn't to recover the ledger.”

A pause.

“It was to destroy it.”

“Whose orders?”

May you like

He looked at me.

“Mine.”
