Chapter 3 - THE MAN WHO NEVER RAISED HIS VOICERichard Morgan rarely shouted.

That was why everyone underestimated him.

Helen insulted people openly. Trent used threats and violence. Nicole recorded humiliation as entertainment.

Richard stayed near doorways.

He watched.

He signed papers.

He allowed other people to appear cruel while he remained respectable.

Alex requested that investigators preserve the complete livestream archive rather than relying on Nicole’s phone alone.

The messaging platform recovered an earlier segment she had deleted before deputies arrived.

At 4:41 that morning, the camera had already been running.

Richard sat at the kitchen island reviewing the transfer documents.

Trent asked:

“What if she refuses again?”

Richard answered calmly:

“Then you create urgency.”

Helen laughed.

“She cries whenever he raises his voice.”

Richard shook his head.

“Crying is not enough. We need either a signature or evidence she cannot manage her own affairs.”

Nicole asked whether she should continue recording.

“Yes,” Richard said. “But only keep what supports instability.”

The assault had not been a spontaneous outburst over breakfast.

It had been part of a decision tree.

If I signed, they obtained the land.

If I refused and reacted emotionally, Nicole’s footage would portray me as unstable.

If I became injured or medically compromised, Trent could activate the temporary financial authority.

Every outcome benefited them.

The deleted video continued.

Helen placed a small bottle beside my coffee cup.

“What is that?” Nicole asked.

Richard replied:

“Something Dr. Vale recommended for anxiety.”

I recognized the bottle.

It was the same liquid supplement my obstetrician, Dr. Samuel Vale, had given me two weeks earlier after I complained of dizziness.

He said it contained vitamins.

The hospital tested the remaining liquid found in our kitchen.

It contained a sedating medication not appropriate for unsupervised use during pregnancy.

The amount in the bottle was not automatically fatal, and doctors found no evidence I had consumed a dangerous dose that morning.

But it could have worsened dizziness and confusion.

My collapse in front of the refrigerator may not have been natural.

Richard had expected it.

Alex traced the development company interested in my land.

Morgan Ridge Communities.

Publicly, Trent owned only five percent.

Privately, a hidden operating agreement gave Richard controlling authority.

The project was not Trent’s desperate business venture.

It was Richard’s retirement plan.

He had taken loans, accepted investor deposits, and promised construction access before he owned the necessary corridor.

If the land deal failed, the company could face massive claims.

Richard needed my signature before investors arrived at eight that morning.

That was why Trent dragged me from bed at five.

That was why the papers waited on the kitchen island.

That was why Nicole was recording.

Then investigators recovered a voicemail Richard had left for Dr. Vale:

If she refuses, document emotional dysregulation. We only need temporary incapacity long enough to complete the transfer.

The doctor replied:

Her brother is becoming suspicious. Keep him away from the house.

Alex stared at the transcript.

“They knew about me.”

The hospital security desk called moments later.

A man claiming to be my attorney had arrived with documents authorizing my transfer to a private maternity clinic.

I had no attorney named on the paperwork.

The clinic belonged to Dr. Vale.

The transfer form stated I was experiencing prenatal psychosis and required restricted communication.

If I had been moved there, I might have lost access to Alex, investigators, and my own phone.

The false attorney was detained for questioning.

In his briefcase, police found cash, forged medical documents, and a handwritten schedule.

At the bottom was an appointment:

7:30 p.m. — Cabin. Burn originals.

Alex looked at me.

“Trent and Richard still have evidence somewhere else.”

Then Nicole appeared at the hospital asking to speak privately.

She was pale and shaking.

May you like

“I know where the originals are,” she whispered. “But if I tell you, my mother will reveal what I did to your baby’s records.”

Cliffhanger: Nicole wanted to expose her family—but she had also helped alter medical information connected to my unborn child.
