Dad's renunciation looked legitimate.
Signature authentic.
Witnessed by Sheriff Harper.
Notarized by Mayor Linda Brooks, back when she was county clerk.
He gave up every Cain family claim.
In exchange:
Cain Realty agreed never to pursue Turner Family Diner property.
A settlement.
Then the next day Dad's truck went off Route 9.
Wade violated the agreement after Dad's disappearance.
Why?
Because something happened between signing and crash.
We found it in the drive.
An audio file.
Dad and Wade.
Dad:
“I signed your paper. Now leave Evelyn alone.”
Wade:
“You should've told me what you found.”
Dad:
“I found enough.”
Then another voice.
Caleb.
“You're both missing the real problem.”
Dad:
“What problem?”
Caleb:
“The Green River money didn't stay with Wade.”
Silence.
“It went into a political fund.”
Which one?
Audio ended.
Maybe damaged.
Maybe intentionally cut.
Then Senator Calvin Cain announced publicly that allegations against his family were politically motivated.
Again, good strategy.
He framed me as a military officer attacking civilians with classified access.
He demanded congressional review of Green River.
That seemed reckless if his family was implicated.
Unless he believed review would clear him.
Or destroy someone else.
Matthew noticed.
“Why invite scrutiny?”
Exactly.
We requested lawful declassification review of historical material.
Weeks, maybe months.
But state authorities moved faster on local crimes.
Sheriff Harper finally cracked.
He requested a private meeting.
“I was driving the other SUV.”
I stared.
“Caleb told me that.”
His face fell.
“He's alive?”

“Then he'll blame everyone but himself.”
Harper admitted Wade ordered him to scare Dad.

Dad accelerated.
Harper clipped him harder than intended.
Crash.
Harper called Wade.
Wade arranged the private clinic.
Then Caleb arrived.
Not Elaine.
Caleb was the first family member there.
“What did he do?”
“Talked to Frank alone.”
Then Dad changed his mind.
He no longer wanted the settlement hidden.
He wanted everything public.
Hours later, Elaine helped him disappear.
Harper believed Dad died later.
He didn't know the truth.
“Why keep protecting Wade?”
“Because he has footage showing me causing the crash.”
“You committed a crime.”
“Yes.”
“Then confess.”
“I just did.”
No absolution.
But a start.
Then Harper gave me the original dashcam drive.
I expected the crash.
It contained that.
But afterward, camera kept recording.
Wade arrived.
Then Caleb.
Then Senator Calvin Cain.
Twelve years younger.
Not yet senator.
Calvin stood beside my father's wrecked truck and said:
“If Frank found the federal account, we have to move the money tonight.”
Wade answered:
“It isn't ours anymore.”
Calvin:
“Whose is it?”
Caleb spoke.
“Evelyn's.”
My mother's name.
I replayed it.
Again.
My mother had some connection to the Green River money.
And this time, when I confronted her, she didn't cry.
