Chapter 7 - The Mission They Removed from History

The gunman’s name was Lucas Trent.
Former Army Ranger.
Declared dead in 2004.
Just like Mara.
We moved him to one of my company’s secure facilities.
Not because I wanted to interrogate him.
Because the moment police learned he was alive, I expected someone to make him dead again.
Trent looked at Reyes.
“You left us.”
Reyes did not defend himself.
That scared me.
“What happened in Kandahar?”
Reyes stared through the observation glass.
“Mara discovered ORACLE GLASS was still active.”
The program had supposedly been terminated before Lily was born.
It wasn’t.
Meridian continued testing it through private military contractors.
Not on enemies.
On American operators.
Specter.
Mara found evidence the system had been used to predict mission behavior, including who would obey an unlawful order and who would resist.
“She tried to expose it,” Reyes said.
“And?”
“I received orders to bring her in.”
My hand tightened.
“From whom?”
“The Pentagon.”
“Who signed them?”
He looked at me.
“No one.”
An unsigned black-channel directive.
Specter operated in that world too often.
Reyes led the extraction.
When they reached Mara’s safehouse, Meridian mercenaries ambushed both sides.
Trent was captured.
Mara disappeared.
“You told me she died.”
“I believed she did.”
“You sent me the flag.”
“I was ordered to.”
I wanted to hit him.
Instead I walked away.
That was new.
The old Daniel Voss would have used anger as permission.
Lily had made me afraid of becoming him again.
Chen recovered the memory card.
The attack video confirmed Tyler’s story.
Ethan struck Lily.
Brandon kicked her after she fell.
Tyler tried to intervene.
Then the hooded woman appeared.
Four seconds of movement.
Enough for me.
The stance.
Weight distribution.
Left hand slightly lower because of an old shoulder injury.
Mara.
My sister was alive.
Reyes watched my face.
“You recognize her.”
“Yes.”
Nineteen years of ghosts rearranged themselves.
Mara had been near Lily.
But why let the attack happen long enough for six fractures?
Why not stop it sooner?
Brooks answered what none of us wanted to say.
“Maybe she needed Daniel activated.”
Everyone went silent.
ORACLE GLASS predicted behavior after emotional triggers.
My wife’s death drove me out of Specter.
What would nearly killing Lily drive me toward?
Back in.
My phone buzzed.
Unknown number.
A photograph of Mara.
Taken that morning.
She was standing outside Mercy General.
Watching Lily’s window.
Underneath:
PHASE TWO BEGINS WHEN THE FATHER CHOOSES REVENGE.
I deleted the message.
Reyes stared at me.
“Who sent it?”
“Someone trying to make me predictable.”
Then Chen whispered from her workstation:
“They already succeeded.”
On her screen, millions of dollars were moving through Meridian accounts.

And every transaction was labeled with the same authorization code.
VOSS RETURNED.
