Chapter 5 - What Lily Found on the Drive

Lily refused to talk until I sent everyone out.

Even Reyes.

Especially Reyes.

That was my first warning.

She used her phone because the wires in her jaw made speech impossible.

I OPENED THE DRIVE.

“I know.”

YOU’RE GOING TO BE MAD.

“Try me.”

She stared at me for a long time.

Then typed:

MOM WASN’T JUST A NURSE.

My wife, Anna, had told everyone she worked as a trauma nurse before pregnancy.

She had met me at Walter Reed after one of my injuries.

At least, that was the story I had believed for twenty years.

Lily opened a file on her phone.

A photograph.

Anna standing inside a secure military facility.

Not in scrubs.

In civilian tactical clothing.

Beside her stood Senator Rebecca Hale, twenty years younger.

Graham Cole.

Charles Whitmore.

And Mara.

My sister.

On the wall behind them:

MERIDIAN BEHAVIORAL SYSTEMS.

I sat down.

“What else?”

Lily showed me documents.

Experimental psychological profiling.

Automated threat prediction.

Social network manipulation.

A classified program code-named ORACLE GLASS.

Meridian had developed software capable of mapping how a person would respond under extreme emotional pressure.

Not mind control.

Something more realistic.

More dangerous.

Prediction.

Feed a system enough personal history, trauma, relationships and behavioral data, and it could calculate what a person was likely to do after a trigger.

Lily swiped to another file.

My name appeared.

SUBJECT: VOSS, DANIEL.

I felt the room tilt.

My wife had been involved in a program studying me.

“What did you read?”

Lily typed slowly.

THEY PREDICTED YOU WOULD LEAVE SPECTER IF MOM DIED.

I stopped.

Not if Lily was born.

If Anna died.

The wording mattered.

A second document.

Projected behavioral outcome following domestic trauma event: 87% probability subject will terminate operational service to assume parental role.

My daughter watched me understand.

Anna’s death had been treated as a variable.

Maybe before it happened.

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

Lily began crying.

BECAUSE I THOUGHT YOU’D GO BACK TO WHO YOU WERE.

That hurt more than I expected.

“You know who I was?”

SOME OF IT.

She had spent the previous week researching Daniel Voss.

Old references.

Leaked records.

Foreign intelligence forums.

Ghost stories from classified wars.

She found men describing me as someone who entered a room only after every exit had already been calculated.

She was afraid.

Not of the attackers.

Of me.

I took her hand.

“I’m still your father.”

She typed:

THEN PLEASE DON’T KILL THEM.

I looked at the three names on the planted paper.

“I won’t.”

That promise became important sooner than either of us knew.

My phone vibrated.

Tyler sent a location.

An abandoned university parking structure.

And four words:

I HAVE THE ORIGINAL VIDEO.

Ten seconds later another message arrived.

PLEASE COME WITHOUT YOUR TEAM.

Then a photograph.

Tyler tied to a chair.

May you like

Behind him stood someone wearing an old Task Force Specter field jacket.

On the shoulder:
