Lucas had lied.
Not entirely.
But materially.
The field did peak in September.
Yet “Evelyn may die after peak” was unsupported.
His grandfather’s records said:
Post-peak anchor probability falls sharply.
Nothing about Evelyn dying.
Lucas exaggerated.
Why?
He wanted action.
He feared Ethan’s caution would waste rescue window.
When Dr. Chen exposed wording, Ethan confronted.
“You told me her body could fail.”
“I said could.”
“You implied evidence.”
“There wasn’t time for committee.”
Evelyn stepped between.
“No.”
Lucas looked at her.
“You want Thomas out.”
“I do.”
“Then we need—”
“You do not get to frighten me into agreeing.”
Exactly.
Ethan watched Evelyn claim agency.
Lucas’s motive wasn’t money.
Not fame, initially.
His grandfather Samuel died believing Thomas could be rescued.
Lucas inherited notebooks and guilt.
He spent twenty years privately studying.
He wanted vindicate Samuel.
He also wanted to prove himself.
When Node B readings rose, he panicked.
Anonymous letters.
Unauthorized lab entry.
Exaggerated medical risk.
Good intention corrupted by control.
He was removed from decision authority but allowed share technical data under supervision.
That was proportional.
Then Dr. Chen found better path.
Thomas did not need full September peak.
Node B opening today had increased coupling.
A controlled extraction could be attempted within two weeks at lower energy.
Risk to mansion lower.
Risk of re-capture lower.
Thomas communicated willingness.
He wrote:
TRY.
Then:
IF FAIL DO NOT RISK E.
Evelyn covered mouth.
After 130 years, Thomas still thought about her.
They planned.
Independent observers.
Emergency medical team.
Power cutoffs.
No one inside chamber except extraction target who was already displaced.
Evelyn two miles away.
Live video link.
Multiple operators required to authorize.
No single person could repeat Elias or Charles.
On test day, Thomas appeared gradually through reflective distortion.
First hand.
Then shoulder.
Then entire body—
and vanished.
Failed.
Evelyn screamed.
Sensors showed field spike.
Then Thomas appeared for 0.3 seconds in Node B upstairs.
Wrong anchor.
A camera captured him falling forward.
Then gone.
That was still progress.
He could reach house.
Why Node B?
Because Evelyn’s previous path left stronger anchor.
System was following her route.
Dr. Chen proposed retuning anchor using 1975 Elias watch.
Object associated with primary chamber.
Thomas recognized watch through visual window.
He wrote:
FATHER’S WATCH?
Evelyn corrected:
ELIAS’S.
Thomas nodded.
Then wrote:
KEY.
Not sentimental.
Functional.
Inside watch casing was tiny engraved frequency sequence.
Elias had hidden calibration values.
The “watch” Charles thought mysterious object was actually control key sent forward.
Who sent it?
Thomas.
He had scratched warning and pushed watch through weak channel in 1975.
From his perspective maybe minutes after Evelyn vanished in 1974.
He had been trying to help.
Another major payoff.
The system was not randomly dropping objects.
