Not a mysterious person.
An experimental phonograph relay.
Elias had installed speaking tube/electrical voice transmitter from control room to chamber.
During storm, power surge caused delayed playback.
An earlier command:
“Ring second bell after I say now.”
The word “now” replayed seconds late.
Thomas mistook as live instruction.
He pulled lever.
Tragic technical error.
No mastermind.
No time traveler causing itself.
That was satisfying because it closed another tempting mystery cleanly.
Elias later discovered.
His 1897 note:
The relay spoke my own command at the wrong moment. I sent them away with my voice.
Evelyn broke down reading.
Her father blamed himself accurately.
Not forever unanswered.
Then Dr. Chen explained likely sequence:

Because family history recorded death instead of disappearance.
Why Evelyn officially “drowned”?
Elias covered experiment initially.
He staged river story to protect laboratory and family reputation while privately seeking rescue.
That revelation hurt Evelyn.
“My father lied about my death?”
“Yes.”
Elias believed if public learned experimental accident, authorities would seize equipment before he could retrieve her.
Another protection-through-secrecy decision.

Did it help?
Probably not.
Maybe outside scientists could have helped.
But 1896 capabilities limited.
Evelyn held both truths:
father loved her.
father lied.
No simplification.
Then Ethan asked Margaret why she never told him 1974 story.
Margaret answered:
“Because every year it sounded less believable.”
“And because?”
“My father made me promise.”
“You were seventeen then.”
“I wasn’t seventeen for next fifty years.”
That was honest.
At some point fear became choice.
Margaret admitted.
Ethan didn’t shame.
He insisted record be made now.
Helen gave statement too.
Thomas gave.
Evelyn gave.

Then scientists inspected shadow room Thomas saw.
By matching concrete panels and red digital display, they identified it.
Not 2026 lab.
A research annex Charles built in 1978 at another property.
But Charles supposedly abandoned temporal work in 1975.
He had not.
Separate mystery.
Yet this one could still be part of current arc if we resolve what it means, not open too early.
Records showed Charles secretly resumed research in 1978 at offsite facility named Alder Station.
Why?
He believed Thomas still recoverable.
Not only obsession.
Guilt.
He never succeeded.
But someone else later inherited Alder Station.
Who?
A private research nonprofit.
Still active.
And one of its directors in 2026:
Lucas Ward.
Ethan looked at Lucas.
“You didn’t tell us.”
Lucas’s face fell.
