Chapter 5 - “I Won’t Do That Again”
Ethan’s full reply was:
Claire is not Emily. I won’t do that again.
What did “that” mean?
Cover financial theft?
Lie to police?
Let a wife die?
Something worse?
Prosecutors refused to interpret without context.
Then next message from Margaret:
You won’t have to if she stays ignorant.
Ethan:
She found Sabrina messages.
Margaret:
Then distract her.
Ethan:
I’ll handle my marriage.
Nothing explicitly murderous.
Then night of fall.
No texts because both present.
I remembered shove.
But memory plus motive plus lies could support charges depending jurisdiction.
Still investigation.
Then Margaret’s interrogation after hospital assault.
She invoked attorney after initial questions.
But before counsel, bodycam captured spontaneous statement while handcuffed:
“She was supposed to leave Ethan alone.”
Mason:
“Who?”
“Claire.”
Then:
“You people don't understand what wives do to sons.”
She stopped.
Not confession.
Then hospital room surveillance audio clearly captured:
“You should’ve died on that sidewalk.”
And pillow attack.
At minimum attempted suffocation/assault case strong.
Could prosecutors use it to reopen Emily.
Yes.
Then Ethan.
His attorney arranged voluntary interview.
He admitted he was on balcony when Emily fell.
Six-year lie.
Why?
“My mother told me if I said I was there, police would blame me.”
“What happened?”
According to Ethan:
Emily and Margaret argued.
Margaret grabbed Emily.
Ethan tried separate.
Emily pulled away.

Fell.
Accident amid struggle.
Did Margaret push?
“She grabbed her.”

“I don't know.”
After fall, Margaret told delay calling 911?

“Maybe two minutes.”
Records showed 911 call six minutes after likely fall based recorder/time.
Why lie drunk?
“Mom said police would destroy us over trust scandal.”
He complied.
Then insurance:
used to replace missing funds at Margaret’s demand.
Why?
“I had just lost wife. I couldn't lose mother too.”
Tragic cowardice.
Then Claire’s fall.
Ethan admitted argument.
“I grabbed her.”
“Did you push?”
He cried.
“She was walking away.”
“Did you push?”
“I grabbed shoulder. She jerked. I shoved her away.”
“Toward balcony?”
“Yes.”
“Did you intend her to go over?”
“No.”
“What happened?”
“She hit railing and went over.”
So he caused.
Intent disputed.
Then:
“Why tell police you weren't there?”
“Because I knew what it looked like.”
“Why tell Claire she jumped?”
“I panicked.”
“Why not call ambulance?”
He did call immediately after Claire fell? Yes. Unlike Emily, he called 911 within 20 sec. That supports not intending death, but still dangerous shove and coverup.
Then Margaret arrived after? Smart log showed she was there before. Ethan admitted:
“She came because I called after Claire found Sabrina messages.”
“Why?”
“I thought she could calm her.”
No.
Margaret told:
“Make her stop threatening divorce before trust audit.”
Because Claire knew finances? Did I? I was maybe signatory to loan? Let's establish Claire had discovered suspicious account while investigating Ethan's affair messages. She told Ethan she would have her accountant review marital/trust finances before divorce. Margaret feared.
Then during argument Margaret said:
“If she leaves, she takes questions with her.”
Ethan:
“She’s my wife.”
Margaret:
“So was Emily.”
That may have triggered.
Then Ethan pushed Claire.
Maybe rage, not premeditated murder.
After fall, Margaret said:
“Tell them she jumped.”
Ethan complied.
Again cover.
Then why Margaret later tried kill Claire?
Because Claire woke and began remembering; she feared exposure.
Ethan did not know mother planned suffocation? Evidence suggests no.
Differentiated culpability:
Ethan responsible for shove, false report, Emily coverup, financial concealment.
Margaret for attempted killing Claire, financial fraud, Emily confrontation/potential push.
Could Margaret have intentionally killed Emily? Need resolve later.
Then Sabrina.
She hated Ethan.
When hearing his confession:
“He let my sister lie there six minutes.”
Yes.
Could six minutes have changed survival? Medical examiner review: Emily suffered catastrophic injuries; prompt maybe died at scene. Experts could not say earlier call would have saved. Don't falsely assign.

Then I asked:
“Did Ethan ever love Emily?”
Sabrina:
“Yes.”
“How know?”
“Because love doesn’t make people brave.”
Strong.
Then my marriage.
Did Ethan love me?
Probably.
Not enough.
Then charges:
Ethan arrested after interview? Prosecutors authorize charges:
aggravated assault/reckless endangerment related to Claire’s fall and evidence tampering/false statement? Attempted murder intent maybe not yet.
Could be domestic assault causing serious injury. We need not exact statute.
He was taken into custody pending arraignment.
He did not resist.
Margaret already held.
Then forensic current trust audit:
Margaret’s latest $4.6m shortage went to failing real-estate development run by her brother Robert. She planned to repay after refinancing.
Same pattern.
No lavish personal gain.
She viewed family trust as her money.
Then my insurance increase.
Who signed?
E-signature logs from our home IP.
Ethan initiated.
My authentication code used.
I remembered signing estate packet on tablet without reviewing each amendment.
I had legally consented, likely.
So not forged.
Ethan said:
“Advisor recommended increase after house purchase.”
Advisor confirmed.
Not evidence murder.
Important.
Then friend Nina visited.
She had a voicemail I left night fall accidentally pocket-dialed.
Mason collected.
Audio:
Claire:
“You lied about being married before?”
Ethan:
“Who told you?”
Claire:
“Sabrina.”
So I had confronted Emily secret too? Wait I thought Sabrina mistress from messages. Maybe she messaged me just before, revealing identity? Let's say minutes before fall, Sabrina finally sent photo of herself with Emily and wrote "I'm her sister." Claire confronted.
Then audio:
Margaret:
“Give me phone.”
Claire:
“No.”
Movement.
Ethan:
“Mom, stop.”
Claire:

Margaret:
“You think you can destroy us?”
Then Ethan:
“Claire, enough.”
Then scream/static.
The voicemail ended before fall.

I didn't remember.
Attic safe?
Our house had old safe belonging Ethan's father.
