The Woman Who Fell Before Me / Chapter 14 / 15

Chapter 14 - The Balcony in Amalfi

Two years into relationship with Daniel, we went to Italy.

I had avoided balconies unconsciously.

Hotel room:

French doors.

Stone terrace.

Sea.

I stopped.

Daniel saw.

“We can change rooms.”

Old me might say no and force.

I said:

“Maybe.”

We changed first night.

Next day, therapist by phone? Not necessary.

I asked hotel if I could visit terrace in daylight with Daniel.

We did.

Rail solid.

I stood inside doorway.

Heart racing.

Daniel did not touch.

No “you can do it.”

Just waited.

I stepped out.

One step.

Then another.

Sea bright.

I cried.

Not because healed.

Because I could choose direction.

I turned back inside when wanted.

No one blocked.

That night we stayed in balcony room? We returned original? Maybe no.

The point choice.

Then Daniel proposed months later.

I said not yet.

He smiled.

“Okay.”

That response was answer I needed.

A year later, I proposed to him? Nice agency.

At breakfast:

“Still want marry?”

“Yes.”

“Good.”

We married small civil ceremony.

Sabrina attended.

Nina.

Mason? Maybe sent congratulations, not cross professional.

No Morgan family.

I kept surname Davis.

Daniel Cho kept his.

No title merging.

Then news of Margaret.

She wrote final letter after appeal exhausted, not ill.

I considered.

Daniel:

“You don't have to.”

I read.

Claire,

I told myself wives took Ethan from me.

Emily threatened money.

Natalie threatened influence.

You threatened the story I built.

No excuse.

Then:

When Emily fell, I grabbed her because she was walking away with copies of ledgers. She pulled free. I pushed her shoulder.

There.

Direct confession beyond conviction.

I did not mean for her to go over railing.

Then:

When I put pillow over your face, I did mean to kill you.

No ambiguity.

Because she feared Claire would connect.

Then:

Those are not same crime in my mind, but both came from same belief: if I could stop woman in front of me, I could stop consequence behind her.

Powerful.

Then:

Ethan did not kill Emily.

Sabrina needed line.

We showed her.

She cried.

Then:

He did fail her afterward.

Yes.

Then Margaret wrote:

I know prison is consequence. Do not turn it into proof world is fair. Emily is still dead. Your body still hurts.

True.

Then:

I am sorry.

No request forgiveness.

I gave copy to prosecutor? If already convicted, letter through legal channel may be filed; attorney advised preserve.

Then Sabrina took confession copy to Emily’s grave.

I went.

First time together.

She read no full letter.

Just said:

“She finally said it.”

We stood.

Then Sabrina asked:

“Do you think Emily would hate me for using you?”

“I don't know.”

“I do.”

“Stop speaking for dead women.”

She laughed through tears.

Then:

“Do you hate me?”

“Not anymore.”

Forgiveness maybe.

Then:

“Thank you.”

We hugged.

Then Ethan learned of confession.

He wrote to Sabrina? She declined.

No contact.

Then Margaret eventually died in prison? Could happen years later. Maybe not necessary. For final closure, yes maybe at 76 after serving 13 years, dies from natural illness. But avoid equating death punishment. Story can end while alive.

Better final chapter years later, Claire gives talk? Not too preachy.

Need tie hospital pillow, Emily, freedom.
