Chapter 6 - Thomas Bennett’s Secret

Thomas Bennett had been sixty-one when Grace was born.
Caroline was twenty-two.
I immediately feared the worst explanation.
Caroline corrected it.
“Thomas never touched me.”
“Then why would he think Grace was his?”
“Because someone wanted him to.”
Who?
Judith.
Or so Caroline believed.
The Bennett family owned Bennett Clinical Systems, a regional medical-billing and laboratory company.
Thomas controlled it.
Michael wanted nothing to do with the business.
Judith effectively ran operations.
Years earlier, Thomas discovered millions disappearing through shell vendors.
He planned to divorce Judith and expose the fraud.
Then Caroline became pregnant.
Someone fabricated a paternity test indicating Thomas was the father.
Thomas panicked.
If released publicly, it would destroy him and devastate Michael.
He paid.
Blackmail.
“Who had the test?”
Caroline said:
“I thought Judith.”
Judith denied it.
Detective Ortiz found something more interesting.
The laboratory that produced the fake paternity report belonged indirectly to Bennett Clinical Systems.
The technician approving it:
Evelyn Cross.
Before becoming a pediatrician.
Michael stared at the document.
“My mother and Evelyn were blackmailing Dad?”
Maybe.
But the dates didn’t fit.
The first payment from Thomas occurred before Judith allegedly learned Caroline was pregnant.
Someone else knew first.
Caroline.
Michael.
Evelyn.
And one additional person.
Caroline’s older sister.
Melissa Mercer.
A name Michael remembered immediately.
“She hated me.”
Caroline looked at him.
“She hated everyone.”
Melissa had worked in accounting for Bennett Clinical Systems.
She disappeared after Thomas began investigating financial irregularities.
Another disappearance.
Except Ortiz found her.
Not dead.
Not hidden overseas.
Living fifteen minutes from the hospital.
Under her married name.
Melissa Vale.
Then Sarah—the person I had been before that morning—finally started recognizing the architecture.
Michael wasn’t the mastermind.
Judith might not be either.
People had spent fifteen years hiding different pieces because each believed exposure would destroy someone they loved.
Michael hid his first marriage.
Judith hid Grace.
Caroline hid Grace’s survival.
Evelyn falsified death and medical records.
Thomas paid blackmail.
Every lie protected another lie.
And somewhere inside that chain was the person who had started it.
Police brought Melissa in voluntarily.
She was fifty now.
Elegant.
Calm.
Not remotely surprised.
“Grace is alive?” she asked.
Caroline stood.
“You know she is.”
Melissa smiled sadly.
“I hoped.”
“What did you do?”
“Less than Judith thinks. More than you’d forgive.”
She admitted discovering Thomas’s financial investigation.
But she claimed she hadn’t fabricated the paternity test.
“Then who did?”
Melissa looked at Michael.
“Ask why Evelyn Cross suddenly went from laboratory medicine into pediatrics.”
Evelyn had changed careers after Grace’s birth.
Why?
Because someone paid for medical school.
The payments came from a trust.
Beneficiary concealed.
Trust creator:
Thomas Bennett.
Michael’s father had funded Evelyn.
Why would the victim of blackmail pay the person who created the fraudulent test?
Unless Thomas knew it wasn’t fraudulent.
Detective Ortiz asked Caroline for permission to compare archived DNA.
She agreed.
Two days later, results arrived.
Grace was Michael’s biological daughter.
No ambiguity.
Thomas was not her father.
So why fund Evelyn?
Because Evelyn hadn’t fabricated the paternity test to fool Thomas.
She had fabricated it at Thomas’s request.
Michael stared at the report.
“My father framed himself?”
Ortiz nodded.
That was exactly what it looked like.
The question was why.
Then Melissa laughed softly.
“You still think this was about Grace.”
“What was it about?”
“Emily.”
I froze.
Emily hadn’t even been conceived when the first fake test was created.
Melissa looked directly at me.
“Sarah, when did you meet Michael?”
“Seventeen years ago.”
“And where were you working?”
I knew.
Bennett Clinical Systems.
Accounting department.
Six months before Michael and I ever dated.
Melissa smiled without warmth.
May you like
“Thomas wasn’t hiding Grace from Michael.”
“He was hiding something from you.”
