Chapter 4 - Caroline Mercer

Her name was Caroline Mercer.

Michael married her at twenty-one.

The marriage lasted eleven months.

No children.

That was his version.

The truth was buried inside a sealed county record Detective Ortiz found before noon.

Caroline had been pregnant.

Seven months pregnant when she disappeared.

Michael claimed he hadn’t known.

Judith claimed she had.

I sat beside Emily’s recovery bed while my marriage transformed into something I barely recognized.

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

Michael stared at the floor.

“Because Caroline left.”

“Pregnant.”

“I didn’t know until later.”

“Your mother did.”

“Yes.”

“When did you find out?”

“After we were married.”

I laughed once.

Sixteen years of marriage reduced to an answer he had chosen not to give.

“What happened to her?”

“Nobody knew.”

Judith interrupted.

“That isn’t true.”

Michael turned.

“What?”

Judith looked exhausted.

“Caroline contacted me.”

“When?”

“After Emily was born.”

Silence.

My hands tightened around the bed rail.

Why after Emily?

Judith explained that Caroline called her the morning following my delivery.

She sounded frightened.

She said one sentence:

“You need to check the baby’s band.”

Then disappeared again.

That was why Judith noticed the Mercer surname.

Not coincidence.

Someone had deliberately attached a Mercer identification to my newborn daughter.

“Was Caroline in that hospital?”

“I don’t know.”

Detective Ortiz did.

Security archives were long gone.

Employee records weren’t.

A temporary laboratory technician worked the maternity wing that week.

Name:

C. Mercer.

Caroline.

Michael turned gray.

“She was there?”

Apparently.

But why?

The obvious possibility was terrifying.

Had Caroline switched babies?

DNA testing ended that theory quickly.

Emily was biologically mine.

And biologically Michael’s.

My daughter.

No question.

The identification manipulation had another purpose.

Someone wasn’t trying to change whose baby Emily was.

They were trying to change which medical record belonged to her.

That made the mystery darker.

Dr. Harris explained the distinction.

“Someone may have attached another infant’s laboratory results to Emily.”

“Why?”

“We don’t know.”

Then pathology from Emily’s surgery returned.

Her appendix had ruptured recently.

Ordinary disease.

Terrible timing.

No evidence anyone caused it.

But her blood work showed something unrelated.

A rare inherited clotting marker.

Not dangerous by itself.

Michael carried it too.

So had someone else.

A newborn girl delivered fourteen minutes before Emily.

Her archived screening record carried the same marker.

Baby:

Grace Holloway.

Mother:

Caroline Mercer.

Michael stopped breathing.

“No.”

Detective Ortiz stared at him.

“You said Caroline’s pregnancy ended before delivery.”

“That’s what I was told.”

Judith began crying.

I understood before Michael did.

Caroline had given birth.

A daughter.

Michael’s daughter.

Months before I became pregnant.

“Emily has a sister.”

Michael shook his head.

“No.”

“Yes.”

A half-sister.

Grace.

But why mix their records?

Judith finally admitted Evelyn Cross had discovered Grace’s newborn data embedded inside Emily’s pediatric chart.

Someone wanted Grace medically invisible.

And Emily became the cover identity.

Then my phone buzzed.

Unknown number.

A photograph appeared.

Two teenage girls.

Emily.

And another girl.

Same dark hair.

Similar eyes.

Caption:

ASK MICHAEL WHY GRACE WAS NEVER ALLOWED TO EXIST.

I turned the phone toward him.

Michael looked genuinely horrified.

“That’s Caroline.”

He pointed at the woman barely visible behind the second girl.

Detective Ortiz enlarged the image.

Caroline Mercer was alive.

May you like

And beside her stood sixteen-year-old Grace.

Michael’s first daughter.
