Chapter 8 - The Rescue They Expected

I hated the idea instantly.

Nobody likes discovering their bravest moment may have been engineered.

“You’re saying they wanted me to save him?”

Valeria nodded.

“Or die trying.”

“Those are very different outcomes.”

“Not to Vanessa.”

Dante’s expression became cold.

“Explain.”

The mountain crash served multiple purposes.

If Dante died, Vanessa inherited substantial personal assets.

If he survived because Cara rescued him, Cara would enter his protected circle.

Either outcome moved a Vale descendant closer to Meridian.

“And if Cara died?”

“Her Meridian rights pass according to Salvatore’s original succession clause.”

“To whom?”

Valeria looked at herself.

“To Daniel Vale’s descendants.”

Her.

And Vanessa.

So I had been useful alive.

Useful dead.

Wonderful.

“What about Owen?”

“He works for Daniel.”

Dante frowned.

“Not Vanessa?”

“Sometimes Vanessa. Sometimes my father.”

“Which means?”

“Nobody knows whose plan this actually was.”

I looked at my mother.

“You knew all this and still stayed hidden?”

“I was collecting evidence.”

“Eight years?”

“I thought distance protected you.”

I laughed bitterly.

“Apparently everyone in this story thinks abandonment is protection.”

Dante looked away.

The remark landed somewhere personal.

Valeria opened a laptop.

Daniel Vale had spent decades preparing a legal challenge to Moretti ownership.

Some of it was legitimate.

Alessandro had concealed Vale interests.

Some of it was fraud.

Daniel had forged amendments to Meridian that would transfer control to whichever Vale descendant married the active Moretti heir.

I stared at Dante.

“Vanessa married you for the company.”

“Wouldn’t be the first reason people married money.”

His tone was dry.

His eyes weren’t.

“Did you love her?”

He paused.

“I believed I did.”

Before I could respond, Grant entered.

“We found Owen.”

“Where?”

“He contacted us.”

That was worse.

Owen requested a meeting at Bellini’s.

Alone.

Dante laughed.

“No.”

Owen sent proof he possessed the original Meridian charter.

Then one more photograph.

Daniel Vale tied to a chair.

Vanessa standing behind him.

Gun in hand.

Valeria whispered:

“My father.”

For the first time, her composure cracked.

Dante looked at her.

“Still think Owen works for Daniel?”

“No.”

We went to Bellini’s.

Not alone.

Grant positioned men everywhere.

The restaurant was empty.

Owen waited at Booth Seven.

Same booth where everything began.

He smiled at me.

“Waitress.”

“Traitor.”

His smile widened.

“I like you.”

Dante sat opposite him.

“Where’s Daniel?”

“Wrong question.”

“What’s the right one?”

Owen slid a sealed envelope across the table.

“Who hired Cara Fields?”

I opened it.

My Bellini’s employment application.

Attached was the authorization approving my hiring.

Signed electronically.

Dante Moretti.

He stared.

“I never signed this.”

Owen nodded.

“Exactly.”

Then he placed another document beside it.

A Moretti Global executive authorization.

Same signature.

Same encrypted credentials.

Used hundreds of times over seven years.

Dante went silent.

“What are you saying?”

Owen leaned forward.

“Someone has been operating inside your company as you.”

“Who?”

Owen looked past us.

Toward the dark restaurant entrance.

A man stepped from the shadows.

Same height as Dante.

Same eyes.

Same face.

Cara forgot how to breathe.

Dante stood.

May you like

The stranger smiled.

“Hello, brother.”
