Chapter 12 - My Mother Was Never Dead

I didn’t cry.

I had run out of ways to react to dead relatives returning.

Dante looked at me carefully.

“You okay?”

“No.”

Fair enough.

Elaine was alive.

Again.

This time confirmed by live video.

Elizabeth sat down.

“I watched her die.”

Apparently not.

Daniel, bleeding but conscious, laughed bitterly.

“That was the point.”

Elaine had staged her second death.

Not because Vanessa threatened her.

Because Daniel did.

“Dad?”

Valeria stared at him.

Daniel closed his eyes.

He had become obsessed with Meridian.

Elaine realized he would sacrifice anyone—including his daughters—to recover it.

So she disappeared.

Only Owen knew.

That meant Owen had never truly worked for Vanessa.

Or Daniel.

He worked for Elaine.

My mother.

The brake sabotage changed meaning again.

“Did Elaine order it?” I asked.

Vanessa’s confidence finally faltered.

She didn’t know.

Dante looked at Grant.

“Find Owen.”

“Already tracing.”

The signal originated beneath Bellini’s.

Of course.

Again.

We returned to the restaurant where this nightmare began.

The private wine cellar contained an old service tunnel.

At the end was a locked room.

Inside sat Elaine.

Alive.

Older than the photographs.

But unmistakably my mother.

She stood.

I didn’t move.

“Cara.”

“No.”

She stopped.

“Explain first.”

“I will.”

“All of it.”

“Yes.”

“Did you sabotage Dante’s brakes?”

“No.”

“Did Owen?”

Her silence answered.

Dante stepped forward.

“On whose orders?”

“Mine.”

Everything changed.

I stared at her.

“You tried to kill him?”

“No. The brakes were supposed to fail during a controlled test tomorrow. Owen changed the timing.”

Owen had betrayed her.

Why?

“Because he discovered something in Meridian.”

“What?”

Elaine opened a safe.

Inside was a handwritten ledger.

Salvatore Vale’s original.

The two-percent stewardship share was never supposed to pass automatically through blood.

It passed to a designated guardian.

Lucia designated Elaine.

Elaine designated—

“Cara?” Dante asked.

My mother shook her head.

“No.”

I felt strangely relieved.

“Who?”

Elaine looked at Dante.

“You.”

Silence.

Dante almost laughed.

“Why would Lucia give me control?”

“She didn’t.”

“Then?”

“I did.”

My mother had changed the designation six months before her disappearance.

Dante was twenty-nine.

Already running Moretti Global.

Elaine had studied him secretly and concluded he was the only Moretti who repeatedly refused to exploit Meridian’s hidden accounts.

“But I never knew.”

“That was the requirement.”

A steward who knew could be corrupted.

Dante’s control activated only if Elaine legally died.

But Elaine wasn’t dead.

Therefore Meridian remained unresolved.

Owen discovered this.

He decided the simplest solution was to kill both Elaine and Dante, leaving succession open to manipulation.

“Where is Owen now?”

A slow clap answered.

He stood in the tunnel entrance.

Gun lowered but visible.

“Very good.”

Grant reached for his weapon.

Owen smiled.

“Don’t.”

He held up a second device.

Dead-man switch.

“Meridian isn’t a fortune.”

“We know,” I said.

“No.”

He looked at Elaine.

“You know part of it.”

Then at me.

“Your grandfather didn’t build Meridian to hide blackmail.”

“What did he build it for?”

Owen’s expression became almost reverent.

“To identify who murdered Lucia Moretti.”

Dante froze.

Elaine went pale.

May you like

Owen smiled.

“And the killer is standing in this room.”
