Chapter 9 - What Robert Had Been Protecting

Dad admitted it immediately.

The original ledger had been hidden inside a sealed evidence cabinet in his former law office.

He had protected it for twenty-four years.

Not read it.

Not destroyed it.

Not surrendered it.

“Why?”

“Attorney-client privilege.”

I nearly screamed.

“Whose?”

“Evelyn’s.”

Of course.

My grandmother had hired him before contacting my mother.

Dad became the legal custodian of evidence.

But Evelyn insisted it remain sealed until one of two conditions occurred:

Halcyon attempted harming Caroline’s descendants.

Or Harold Mercer’s network began moving children again.

Ellie’s burn triggered the first.

Cole’s abduction triggered both.

The ledger opened.

Names.

Dates.

Birth records.

Adoption transfers.

Judges.

Attorneys.

Doctors.

Payments.

Hundreds of families.

Then one name stopped me.

Rachel Lawson.

My name.

I looked at Dad.

“What?”

He went pale.

“I never opened it.”

The entry:

Female infant.

Original designation: Baby 47.

Transfer authorized: Caroline Lawson.

Biological source: Confidential.

My knees weakened.

Caroline was not my biological mother.

“No.”

Dad grabbed the table.

“That’s impossible.”

Evelyn looked devastated.

“Caroline knew.”

I stared at her.

“She knew I wasn’t hers?”

“She carried you.”

“What?”

Yes.

Caroline gave birth to me.

But the embryo was not genetically hers.

The private fertility program continued into the 1990s.

Caroline struggled to conceive.

A doctor offered an anonymous donor embryo.

She accepted.

Then discovered afterward that the embryo came from the same hidden network she had spent years fearing.

She loved me.

That never changed.

But genetically, my origins were unknown.

Dad sat down hard.

“She never told me.”

“She was afraid you’d investigate.”

He laughed painfully.

“She was right.”

Then I found another notation.

Baby 47 linked to:

E.S.-01.

Evelyn Shaw.

My heart stopped.

Evelyn stared.

“No.”

“What?”

She took the ledger.

Read.

Her hands began shaking.

The embryo used for my conception had been created from an egg Evelyn donated decades earlier.

Frozen.

Stored.

Then used without her knowledge years later.

Biologically—

Evelyn was my mother.

Not grandmother.

The room went silent.

Gary stared at me.

That made me his half-sister.

Ben—

Gary’s son—

would be my biological nephew.

I nearly collapsed.

No.

Dad immediately called a geneticist.

“Do not assume anything from a handwritten ledger.”

Thank God someone said it.

Independent testing followed.

Days.

Longest days of my life.

Results:

The ledger was wrong.

Or intentionally falsified.

Evelyn was not my biological mother.

She was related to me—

but more distantly.

Likely great-aunt or half-great-aunt.

The family tree remained unclear.

For once, I stopped caring.

Then investigators found something more important.

The ledger’s Baby 47 entry had been altered.

Different ink.

Different handwriting.

Added years later.

Someone wanted me connected to Evelyn.

Why?

Dad compared the handwriting.

He recognized it.

Harold Mercer.

Gary’s adoptive father.

Harold had inserted my name.

But Harold died before I was born.

Impossible.

Unless the date of alteration was wrong.

Forensic analysis determined the ink was approximately ten years old.

Harold had been dead thirty.

So someone imitated his handwriting.

Who?

Then Dana produced Gary’s notebooks.

Same letter formations.

Gary.

He had falsified the ledger.

Why?

To create a genetic claim around me.

To convince Halcyon that I mattered.

Why would he want that?

Evelyn understood first.

“Protection.”

Gary had placed me inside the conspiracy deliberately.

Because Halcyon wouldn’t kill someone potentially tied to the ownership claim.

He hadn’t been hunting me.

He had been hiding me in plain sight.

Then the question became:

From whom?
