Chapter 11 - Ben’s Real Parents

Ben sat across from me inside Dad’s conference room.
He looked destroyed.
I didn’t comfort him.
Not because I felt nothing.
Because compassion did not erase what he had done.
Independent testing confirmed:
Gary and Linda were not Ben’s biological parents.
Dana and Aaron were theirs.
Ben was adopted.
Secretly.
No legal record.
His birth certificate listed Linda as mother.
Gary as father.
Fraud.
Ben whispered:
“They never told me.”
Dana cried.
Gary eventually explained.
Thirty-two years earlier, Linda suffered a stillbirth.
Same hospital.
Same night another woman delivered a healthy boy and died from complications.
That woman:
Sarah Quinn.
Rose Shaw’s daughter.
Rose had survived longer than Evelyn knew.
Had a daughter.
Sarah.
Then Sarah had Ben.
When Sarah died, Halcyon representatives arrived immediately.
Why?
Because they had been tracking Rose’s descendants.
Gary was working inside the network by then.
He took the infant first.
Ben.
He and Linda raised him as their own.
Gary claimed he saved Ben.
Maybe he did.
But he also used him.
Monitored his genetics.
Tested his children.
Turned family into laboratory material.
Ben stared at Gary through the interview-room glass.
“Everything was a lie.”
I looked at him.
“Now you understand.”
He knew what I meant.
Our marriage.
The DNA test.
His silence.
He looked down.
“I do.”
Ellie inherited Rose’s marker through Ben.
That made her scientifically important.
Potentially legally important too.
If Rose had been the true inventor or biological source behind Halcyon’s foundational patent, descendants could challenge ownership.
But I didn’t care about billions.
I cared about why Marcus Vale wanted my daughter’s DNA.
Then Evelyn revealed the answer.
The marker wasn’t valuable because it proved inheritance.
It revealed fraud.
Halcyon’s flagship treatment had been marketed for decades as derived from synthetic research.
Actually, it originated from Rose’s rare genetic mutation.
Without consent.
The modern company had built newer therapies from the same genetic line.
If exposed—
criminal investigations.
Patent challenges.
Medical ethics scandal.
Billions at risk.
Ellie’s DNA could connect modern samples directly back to Rose’s surviving family.
That was why Marcus Vale wanted control.
Not necessarily Ellie physically.
Her samples.
Her records.
Her silence.
Then we discovered something terrifying.
The hospital where Ellie had been treated after the coffee incident had already sent blood to an outside laboratory.
Routine tests.
The outside lab?
Halcyon Clinical Services.
I stood so quickly my chair fell.
“They have her blood.”
Dad called immediately.
Too late.
Sample transferred.
Processed.
Archived.
Marcus Vale no longer needed Gary.
Or Linda.
Or Cole.
He had what he wanted.
Then my phone rang.
Unknown number.
I answered.
“Mrs. Mercer?”
Male voice.
Polished.
Calm.
“Marcus Vale.”
My hand tightened.
“You have my daughter’s blood.”
“I have a laboratory sample obtained through lawful medical channels.”
“You know exactly what I mean.”
Pause.
Then:
“Your daughter is remarkable.”
Every maternal instinct inside me became rage.
“Stay away from her.”
“I have no interest in harming Ellie.”
“Then what do you want?”
“To correct a misunderstanding before your father creates a war neither of us needs.”
Dad heard.
His face hardened.
Marcus continued:
“Tomorrow morning. Halcyon headquarters. Bring Robert Lawson.”
“Why?”
“Because he has something belonging to me.”
“What?”
A pause.
Then:
“The original video.”
I stared.
Not the coffee video.
Something older.
Dad went pale.
Marcus laughed softly.
“Ask your father what Rose Shaw recorded the night she disappeared.”
I turned toward Dad.
May you like
He closed his eyes.
Another secret.
