Chapter 14 - Claire’s Confession

For eleven years, Ethan imagined what he would say if Claire somehow returned.
He had imagined anger.
Questions.
Maybe forgiveness.
Never this.
“I built JANUS after Thomas died,” Claire said.
Nathan shook his head.
“That’s impossible. You were nineteen.”
“I had help.”
“From Arthur?”
“Eventually.”
Claire’s story reached further back.
Her mother, Maria Bennett, had known Thomas Mercer.
Elias was their son.
Claire was Maria’s daughter from a later marriage.
Elias was Claire’s older half-brother.
Which meant Elias was also Ethan’s half-brother.
Claire and Ethan were not biologically related.
But their families had been entangled before either understood it.
Claire discovered Elias when she was seventeen.
He had been erased from family history after severe disputes with Thomas.
Thomas created early JANUS architecture partly to protect Elias’s financial identity after Maria feared Thomas’s contractors were monitoring him.
Years later, Claire found the system.
She believed it could protect vulnerable people.
Abuse survivors.
Witnesses.
Families needing temporary identity separation.
She expanded it.
Arthur Vale helped.
Nathan later rebuilt portions without knowing Claire had already worked on the original.
“Why marry me?”
Ethan asked.
Claire’s face broke.
“Because I loved you.”
“That simple?”
“No.”
At least she did not insult him with an easy answer.
She had initially approached Ethan because she wanted information about Thomas.
Then she fell in love.
She stopped investigating.
For a while.
Until shadow transactions appeared under Ethan’s name.
Claire believed Elias was using JANUS.
She investigated.
Someone learned she was close.
The staged car death followed.
“Did Elias threaten you?”
“No.”
“Then who?”
“I never knew.”
That answer survived eleven years.
Claire spent years tracing the network.
Northstar.
Arthur.
Nathan’s sale.
Eleanor’s inherited corporate connections.
Every trail suggested a different mastermind.
Exactly as today’s evidence had.
“Why confess that you built JANUS?”
“Because you’re finally asking the wrong question.”
Ethan stared.
“What wrong question?”
“Who is behind it.”
“What should I ask?”
“Who benefits from everyone believing there has to be one person behind it?”
Silence.
Claire explained.
JANUS had been copied repeatedly.
No single mastermind controlled every branch.
Different people exploited it.
Arthur used it for continuity work.
Nathan sold it.
Northstar monetized it.
Elias used it to hide.
Claire used it to investigate.
Someone else used those overlapping crimes to construct today’s event.
The mansion was a trap designed around their assumptions.
Eleanor would blame Ethan.
Ethan would blame Eleanor.
Voss would suspect Northstar.
Claire would suspect Elias.
Nathan would hide his own involvement.
Each person’s guilt would make them believable as the villain.
“So who cut Lily’s harness?”
Ethan asked.
Claire looked devastated.
“I don’t know.”
“You were there.”
“I was brought through the corridor.”
“By Elias?”
“No.”
“Who?”
“A man dressed like you.”
Ethan stared.
“The physical double.”
“Yes.”
“Elias?”
“No.”
Claire had met Elias.
The man in the archived video was Elias.
But the person escorting Claire was not him.
Someone had been made to resemble Ethan.
Cosmetic prosthetics.
Hair.
Clothing.
Movement studied from surveillance.
A performance.
“Where are you now?”
Claire looked around.
“I don’t know.”
The feed suddenly distorted.
Voss shouted:
“Trace it.”
The image flickered.
Before disappearing, Claire leaned toward the camera.
“Ethan, listen to me.”
“I’m listening.”
“The three knocks weren’t asking you to open the door.”
“What?”
“They were a warning.”
“About what?”
“Your father taught us a code when we were children.”
Ethan remembered no code.
Claire continued rapidly.
“One knock means safe. Two means watched. Three means—”
The feed died.
Ethan slammed his fist against the table.
“Get it back.”
Voss worked.
Nothing.
Nathan stood completely still.
Ethan saw it.
“You know.”
Nathan did not answer.
“What do three knocks mean?”
Nathan looked toward the ceiling.
“Someone you trust is in the room.”
Ethan waited.
“That’s the warning?”
“No.”
Nathan swallowed.
“The full meaning is: Someone you trust is in the room, and they are not who they claim to be.”
Every person looked at every other person.
Eleanor.
Nathan.
Voss.
Ethan.
Even sleeping Lily.
Trust itself became dangerous.
Then Voss’s tablet chimed.
The Claire transmission had left one recoverable routing signature.
He stared at it.
“What?”
Ethan demanded.
Voss turned the screen.
The signal had not come from outside the mansion.
Not another state.
Not another building.
Claire was still inside the house.
More disturbing was the device that initiated the connection.
The account belonged to one person.
Ethan Mercer.
But the biometric authentication was not Ethan’s.
It belonged to a second registered user.
Voss opened the enrollment date.
Seven years earlier.
The day Lily was born.
Registered name:
LILY MERCER.
May you like
Ethan stared at his sleeping daughter.
Someone had attached the entire hidden system to Lily’s identity before she could even open her eyes.
