Chapter 10 - Claire’s Second Death

Nathan called back.
Not from Denver.
From a number Voss traced less than five miles away.
“You lied about where you were,” Ethan said.
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because I’ve been trying to get into that house for two days.”
Ethan looked toward Eleanor.
“Come through the front door.”
“I can’t.”
“Why?”
“Because whoever is watching you wants me inside.”
“You’re already part of this.”
“I know.”
“Then come explain which part.”
Nathan arrived eleven minutes later.
No dramatic entrance.
No weapon.
No brown shoes.
He looked older than Ethan remembered.
Not physically.
Morally.
Like a man who had carried one decision for too many years.
Lily ran toward him instinctively.
Ethan stopped her.
Nathan noticed.
Pain crossed his face.
He deserved that uncertainty.
“Claire?”
Ethan asked.
Nathan looked at Voss.
“You told him?”
“He had a right to know.”
Nathan laughed bitterly.
“He had that right eleven years ago.”
Ethan stepped forward.
“Then talk.”
Nathan had helped Arthur Vale design JANUS.
Originally it was legitimate.
A disaster-continuity system.
Executives traveling in unstable regions could maintain emergency administrative credentials if primary identification systems failed.
Ethan became a test subject without consent because Nathan needed a biometric dataset.
“I used your records.”
“You stole my identity.”
“I borrowed data.”
“For eleven years?”
“No.”
Nathan looked ashamed.
“That came later.”
Someone copied JANUS.
Expanded it.
Built shadow identities around real people.
Claire discovered Ethan’s.
She contacted Arthur.
Arthur traced the expansion to Northstar’s predecessor.
Nathan wanted to expose everything.
Arthur wanted time.
Claire wanted Ethan protected.
Then the car accident happened.
“Was it staged?”
“Yes.”
Ethan felt eleven years collapse.
“By Claire?”
Nathan nodded.
Partly.
Claire had learned someone intended to kill her.
Arthur arranged a false death.
The burned vehicle.
Substituted forensic material.
Manufactured identification.
Eleanor’s signature unknowingly approved one invoice.
Claire disappeared.
Ethan’s eyes filled with fury.
“She let me bury her.”
“She believed you were compromised.”
“You keep saying that.”
“Because someone was using your credentials inside the operation.”
“I didn’t know.”
“She eventually realized that.”
“When?”
“Three months later.”
Ethan stared.
“And she still stayed gone?”
Nathan looked down.
“That was Claire’s second death.”
She planned to return.
Then someone sent her photographs.
Ethan meeting Eleanor.
Ethan entering Vale offices.
Ethan signing documents.
All real.
But stripped of context.
Ethan had met Eleanor through a charity project months after Claire’s death.
The Vale-office visit concerned an unrelated estate issue.
The signatures were legitimate paperwork.
Claire interpreted them as proof Ethan had joined Arthur’s network.
“She disappeared again,” Nathan said.
“By choice.”
Ethan sat down.
The first death had been staged to save Claire.
The second had happened inside her trust.
She stopped believing Ethan.
Years passed.
Then she discovered the manipulation.
By then Ethan had married Eleanor.
Lily had been born.
Claire believed returning would destroy a child’s family.
“So she stayed dead.”
Nathan nodded.
Eleanor looked shaken.
“She knew about me?”
“Yes.”
“And Lily?”
“Yes.”
Ethan could barely speak.
“Why come back now?”
“Because whoever built the shadow identities started activating old ones again.”
“Mine.”
“Yours first.”
Nathan pulled out a small drive.
“Claire sent me this.”
Voss connected it.
A list appeared.
Hundreds of identities.
Some living.
Some dead.
At the top:
JANUS PRIME — E. MERCER.
Ethan looked at Nathan.
“What does prime mean?”
Nathan’s answer came slowly.
“It means every version traces back to you.”
Ethan stared.
“So I was the first.”
“Yes.”
“No.”
Nathan looked confused.
Ethan pointed at the creation date.
It was seventeen years old.
JANUS existed before Nathan claimed to have designed it.
Before Claire investigated.
Before Arthur Vale became involved.
Nathan’s face changed.
“That date can’t be right.”
Voss examined the metadata.
“It is.”
Eleanor leaned toward the screen.
Creator:
E.MERCER.
Everyone looked at Ethan.
He shook his head.
“I didn’t create this.”
Nathan whispered:
“No.”
His face had gone pale.
“You didn’t.”
“Then who did?”
Nathan looked at him with something Ethan had never seen in his brother’s eyes.
May you like
Fear.
“Our father.”
