Chapter 14 - What Really Happened to Mara

For eight years, everyone had blamed Erebos for Mara’s appearance.

Even Vale.

That was only partly true.

Erebos caused the first changes.

Light sensitivity.

Abnormal healing.

Nerve growth.

Altered connective tissue.

But the extreme transformation—

the elongated fingers.

Gray skin.

Enlarged eyes.

Distorted joints.

Vocal damage.

Those came later.

Vale stared at R-17.

“I never made this.”

Celeste said nothing.

Michael did.

“Daniel did.”

The dead man returned to the story without returning to life.

Daniel Harrow had wanted Erebos commercialized.

Mara’s early transformation made that impossible.

A regenerative medicine that saved a person but visibly altered her would never pass ordinary development.

So Daniel demanded a corrective compound.

Celeste created R-17.

Not to reverse Erebos.

To force the altered cells into a more controllable form.

Animal tests failed catastrophically.

Daniel ordered human use anyway.

Mara refused.

That was when consent ended completely.

They restrained her.

Injected R-17.

Repeatedly.

Anna looked at Mara.

“Is that true?”

Mara nodded.

Tears ran across gray skin.

Vale sat down as though struck.

“I left before R-17.”

Celeste looked at him.

“You left her with Daniel.”

Vale closed his eyes.

Yes.

He had not injected it.

He had not known.

But he left.

Again, responsibility was not one clean category.

Mara’s most frightening features were not inevitable consequences of the treatment that saved her life.

Someone had deliberately made them worse trying to make her more useful.

Anna finally understood the monster.

Mara had not gradually “become evil.”

She had been physically reshaped by people who kept calling each new injury research.

Why had she been trapped for eight years?

At first Daniel locked her away because she was evidence.

Later because her blood remained valuable.

After Daniel died, Celeste continued because Mara was the only long-term survivor.

But three years earlier Mara gained access to the tunnels.

She could have escaped.

Why stay?

Michael.

Then the later subjects.

Mara sabotaged Celeste’s experiments from inside the walls.

Released two captives.

Destroyed samples.

Redirected security.

Celeste thought equipment failures were caused by aging infrastructure.

It was Mara.

The “monster” haunting the mansion had been fighting the laboratory alone.

Then Lily became the target.

Mara watched Celeste prepare the chamber.

She tried to reach Eleanor but could not risk daylight.

When Lily wandered downstairs, Celeste restrained her.

Mara attacked.

Dragged Lily through the maintenance passage.

Could not remove the restraints.

Hid her inside the cold oven cavity.

Stayed beside her.

Sang to her.

Gave her water.

And waited.

For someone.

Anna.

“How did you know I would come?”

Mara looked at Eleanor.

Anna turned.

Eleanor began crying.

“I hired you.”

“What?”

“Specifically.”

Anna stared.

The employment agency had not randomly assigned her.

Eleanor had seen Mara’s old files after Daniel died.

She found Anna’s name.

For three years she did nothing.

Fear.

Shame.

Then Lily began describing a “gray lady” watching from doorways.

Eleanor realized Mara was still alive.

She did not have the courage to contact police.

Or Anna directly.

So she hired Anna as household staff.

Put her near the service wing.

Hoping Mara would reveal herself.

Anna’s anger was almost unbearable.

“You used me as bait.”

“I hoped she trusted you.”

“You could have told me my sister was alive.”

“I didn’t know what she had become.”

“She became my sister!”

Eleanor cried.

“I was afraid.”

Again.

The sentence that built the entire house.

Fear.

Fear of prison.

Fear of scandal.

Fear of death.

Fear of failure.

Every locked door had someone’s fear behind it.

Anna looked at Mara.

“Did you know Eleanor hired me because of you?”

Mara nodded.

“Why didn’t you come to me?”

Mara wrote:

CAMERAS.

Then:

CELESTE.

Then:

ANNA SAFE.

She stayed hidden because Celeste monitored the mansion.

If Mara openly contacted Anna, Anna would become leverage.

But Lily’s abduction changed everything.

Mara could no longer remain hidden.

The whimper from the oven had not been an accident.

Mara had guided Lily there because Anna’s tea route passed the service room every afternoon at exactly that time.

Mara had chosen the moment.

She wanted Anna to find Lily.

Then find her.

The opening scene had not been Anna accidentally discovering a monster.

It had been Mara finally deciding eight years of silence had to end.

Vale looked at the R-17 syringe.

“Why did Celeste bring this tonight?”

Celeste remained silent.

Michael answered.

“Because it wasn’t for Mara.”

Everyone looked at him.

Michael pointed toward Lily.

Celeste had not planned merely to study Lily.

If the stabilizer failed—

she intended to inject Lily with R-17.

The same compound that had turned Mara’s survivable mutation into the horrifying body she now carried.

Anna looked at Celeste.

May you like

Then at Lily.

And finally understood why Mara had risked everything to pull the child into the dark.
