Chapter 13 - Mara Was Never the Failed Experiment

Celeste restrained Mara to the extraction chair.

Anna screamed at her through the glass.

Vale worked desperately at the control console.

Michael watched the system.

Then quietly said:

“She’s lying.”

Vale looked at him.

“About what?”

“The blood.”

Michael had spent years listening.

Celeste talked around him because she considered him cognitively unstable.

He remembered everything.

“She doesn’t need Mara’s blood for Lily.”

Anna turned toward Celeste.

“Then what does she need it for?”

Michael answered.

“Herself.”

Celeste stopped.

There.

The first real crack.

Vale understood.

Celeste was sick.

He looked at her hands.

Tiny tremor.

Her pupils.

Unequal.

The way she occasionally braced herself against equipment.

“Neurodegeneration,” Vale whispered.

Celeste’s expression hardened.

Her father died from the same inherited disease at fifty-eight.

She was sixty now.

Symptoms had begun three years earlier.

She restarted Erebos not to finish scientific work.

To save herself.

Lily was not the intended recipient of the final treatment.

She was the control model.

Celeste needed to understand why Lily tolerated the engineered pathway naturally.

Mara supplied long-term adaptation data.

Michael supplied infant integration.

Lily supplied inherited compatibility.

Three lives.

Three stages.

All to build one treatment.

For Celeste.

Anna stared at her.

“You did all this because you’re afraid to die.”

Celeste’s eyes flashed.

“Everyone in this house did something because they were afraid.”

She pointed toward Eleanor.

“She buried the truth because she feared prison.”

Vale.

“He buried Mara because he feared losing his career.”

Daniel’s empty legacy.

“He kept experimenting because he feared being ordinary.”

Then Anna.

“And you would sacrifice me right now if it guaranteed your sister became human again.”

Anna opened her mouth.

Stopped.

Would she?

Celeste smiled.

“That is why morality is easiest before someone names the price.”

Mara watched Anna.

Anna stepped toward the glass.

“No.”

Celeste’s smile faded.

“I wouldn’t.”

“You don’t know that.”

“Yes, I do.”

Anna looked at Mara.

“I want my sister back. But she is already here.”

Mara’s enormous eye filled with tears.

Anna continued.

“I don’t need her to look the way she used to for her life to matter.”

Something changed in Mara.

Eight years of being treated as failed tissue.

Failed medicine.

Failed humanity.

And finally someone said the thing nobody had:

She did not need to become beautiful again to become a person again.

Mara suddenly flexed her hands.

The restraints snapped.

Celeste stumbled backward.

Mara did not attack her.

She ripped the extraction line from her arm.

Then reached for Lily’s chamber controls.

Celeste grabbed a syringe.

Vale shouted.

Mara moved.

Fast.

She caught Celeste’s wrist.

The syringe fell.

Anna expected violence.

Mara could have broken her arm.

Instead she simply held her.

Celeste stared into the face she had helped create.

For the first time, she looked ashamed.

Mara rasped one word.

“Why?”

Celeste’s eyes filled.

No scientific language came.

No justification.

“I was afraid.”

Mara released her.

That mercy broke Celeste more effectively than violence.

Vale opened Lily’s chamber.

Anna rushed inside.

Lily threw herself into her arms.

“You came!”

Anna held her.

“Yes.”

Mara crouched nearby.

Lily reached toward her.

Mara hesitated.

Then Lily wrapped her small arms around Mara’s neck.

Everyone stopped.

The frightening gray creature remained perfectly still.

Then one long arm slowly curled around the child.

Gentle.

Precise.

Protective.

Anna cried.

But the story was not finished.

Vale picked up Celeste’s fallen syringe.

He examined the label.

His expression changed.

“This isn’t Erebos.”

Celeste went pale.

“What is it?”

Anna asked.

Vale read the code.

“R-17.”

Michael stepped backward.

“No.”

He knew it.

Mara knew it too.

She pulled Lily away from the equipment.

Anna looked between them.

“What is R-17?”

May you like

Michael whispered:

“The thing that made Mara worse.”
