Chapter 8 - Jonathan Pike’s Silence
Jonathan Pike was not mastermind.
But he was not innocent.
He had received Claire’s warning in April.
He saw unauthorized E-40 sensor data.
He suspected someone was exploiting Ethan.
Instead of telling Ethan, he opened confidential board investigation.
Why?
Jonathan said:
“If I confronted whoever was doing it, data could disappear.”
Maya answered:
“You mean if you told the victim.”
Jonathan looked down.
“Yes.”
He had access to independent board counsel.
He had power to secure servers.
He could have preserved evidence and warned Ethan.
He chose secrecy.
Worse, he knew Ethan’s September 18 incapacity deadline.
He deliberately set audit completion for same date because he wanted “clean nine-month window.”
That phrase appeared in emails.
Ethan confronted him.
“You used my disability clause as evidence period.”
“I thought it gave us time.”
“It gave Claire a deadline to keep me weak.”
“I never told her to medicate you.”
“No.”
“But you gave secrecy a reason to continue.”
Jonathan had no response.
He temporarily stepped aside from fiduciary role.
The board appointed independent replacement pending investigation.
That removed September 18 power shift as immediate danger.
But Samuel’s September 19 pitch remained.
Mercer Adaptive Technologies canceled it.
Samuel’s attorney responded that allegations were exaggerated.
Samuel claimed Claire had acted independently.
Then Maya played audio.
“For us, yes.”
Samuel’s voice.
Hard to explain.
He finally agreed to interview.
He appeared calm.
“Ethan was never in danger.”
Ethan nearly laughed.
“You drugged me.”
“I supplied medication already prescribed.”
“Expired prescription.”
“At conservative doses.”
“You manipulated my rehabilitation.”
“I collected data.”
“Without consent.”
Samuel paused.
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because your father destroyed twenty years of work over one flaw I had already corrected.”
Ethan stared.
“My father stopped a system that rewarded keeping patients weaker.”
“That’s not what happened.”
“It happened to Marcus Hale.”
“Because of a contractor.”
“It happened to me.”
Samuel’s jaw tightened.
“That was Claire.”
“You built the situation.”
Samuel denied intending Claire to continue medication as long as she did.
His plan, he claimed, was four weeks.
Claire extended.
But recordings showed Samuel adjusting dosage thresholds months later.
He lied.
Then Ethan asked:
“What does Lily have to do with P0?”
Samuel’s composure slipped.
“Nothing.”
“Then why tell Claire my father’s envelope would expose something about Lily?”
“To keep her from opening it.”
“Why?”
“Because it proved your father knew medication flaw before E-40.”
“Which destroys your story that flaw appeared later.”
Samuel said nothing.
There it was.
Lily had never been part of his business motive.
He used her as emotional lock on Claire.
He knew Claire was protective of child.
He knew fear would stop questions.
The most powerful secret beneath wheelchair was not about Lily at all.
