Chapter 1 - The Night Ethan Stood Up

Lily saw the syringe before Ethan did.

The six-year-old stood barefoot beside the white curtains, already crying as Claire stepped behind Ethan’s wheelchair and lifted a syringe filled with bright orange liquid toward the back of his neck.

“DON’T GIVE DADDY THAT!”

Lily lunged.

Both of her small hands clamped around Claire’s wrist.

Claire’s face hardened.

“Let go.”

Lily pushed upward with everything she had.

The needle stayed away from Ethan.

Then Claire ripped her arm free.

Lily lost her footing.

Her body twisted sideways and her head struck the pale wooden floor beside Ethan’s wheelchair.

She curled instantly, sobbing.

Ethan’s entire expression changed.

He looked down at his daughter.

Then at Claire.

Then at the orange-filled syringe.

“He needs his medicine,” Claire said.

For eight months Ethan had believed those words.

Medicine for damaged nerves.

Medicine to stop spasms.

Medicine that supposedly kept his condition from becoming worse.

Yet every morning after Claire injected him, his legs felt heavier.

His hands tightened around the wheelchair armrests.

Claire noticed.

“Ethan?”

He planted both feet.

Pushed.

His knees trembled so hard he nearly dropped back into the chair.

Then something happened that Claire clearly did not expect.

Ethan stood.

The empty wheelchair remained behind him.

Claire froze.

Ethan took one step.

Then another.

He snatched the syringe from her hand.

“Then why can I stand?”

Claire’s face drained of color.

Ethan immediately crouched beside Lily and lifted her securely against his chest.

Lily clung to his neck.

“She gives it to you every night.”

Ethan stopped breathing.

“How long?”

Claire stared at his legs.

“You weren’t supposed to walk yet.”

Yet.

That single word hit harder than anything else.

Then a faint metallic click came from beneath the wheelchair.

Claire looked toward it.

So did Lily.

Ethan slowly turned.

Claire suddenly moved forward.

“DON’T LOOK UNDER THE SEAT!”

That was enough.

Ethan carried Lily toward the chair.

Claire blocked him.

He stepped around her.

Beneath the wheelchair cushion, mounted against the metal frame, was a small rectangular compartment Ethan had never seen.

One corner had popped loose.

Inside, something metallic glinted.

Claire began shaking.

Ethan reached toward it.

“No.”

His fingers touched a small silver latch.

The compartment opened.

Inside was not medicine.

Not a battery.

Not a wheelchair part.

A tiny digital recorder sat beneath a folded card.

Ethan opened the card.

Three words were written across it:

DO NOT LET HIM WALK.

Below that:

UNTIL SEPTEMBER 18.

Today was September 11.

Ethan looked at Claire.

“What happens in seven days?”

Claire said nothing.

May you like

But Lily whispered against his shoulder:

“That’s when Daddy loses his company.”
