Chapter 9 - Which Son Was Caroline's?

Caroline believed Ethan was her biological child.

Not Margaret’s.

That contradicted the hospital’s Daniel Cole match.

But Caroline had evidence.

A DNA report dated only three weeks earlier.

Mother:

Caroline Bennett.

Tested subject:

Ethan Harper.

Probability of maternity:

99.99%.

Ethan stared at the report.

“This is fake.”

Maybe.

We refused to trust another private document.

We arranged independent testing.

Until then, no declarations.

No emotional ownership.

No one was calling Ethan anybody’s stolen child.

But Caroline believed it.

Why?

She said Robert switched the babies after birth.

Margaret’s biological son Daniel was moved elsewhere.

Caroline’s son was given to Margaret and renamed Ethan.

Then what about Caroline’s daughter Claire?

Another contradiction.

Susan looked confused.

Caroline had told her she gave birth to a girl.

Maybe Caroline lied to protect the boy’s identity.

Maybe Susan misunderstood.

Maybe records had been manipulated so deeply that memory was the only source left—and memory was failing everyone.

Then Margaret revealed what Caroline said at 5:11.

“She told me, ‘You got thirty-five years. I want what’s left.’”

Ethan went pale.

“She said that about me?”

“Yes.”

He looked disgusted.

“I’m not property.”

Margaret cried.

“I told her that.”

For the first time, I saw something shift between them.

Whatever Margaret’s controlling behavior had been, she understood one thing:

Motherhood did not grant ownership of an adult son.

Then why did she sleep beside him?

“She said Caroline had a key to the passage.”

“What passage?”

Our bedroom had a hidden service staircase built during Robert’s renovations.

Of course it did.

I almost laughed.

Margaret believed Caroline would enter from behind the wardrobe.

So she stayed beside Ethan.

“Why not call police?”

Because Margaret feared the old Hawthorne files would implicate her.

Again.

Secrecy over common sense.

I was exhausted by it.

Then independent investigators searched the hidden staircase.

They found Caroline’s gray catering jacket.

A syringe wrapper.

And my phone.

Inside my phone was the deleted voice memo from 1:31.

Recovered.

My voice.

Angry.

Clear.

“If I forget this, Ethan did not drug me.”

I stopped breathing.

My own voice continued:

“Margaret didn’t either.”

Then another voice.

Caroline.

“Good girl.”

My voice:

“You promised this won’t hurt the baby.”

Silence.

Ethan stared at me.

“What baby?”

I felt the room tilt.

“I’m not pregnant.”

At least I didn’t think I was.

Caroline’s voice answered on the recording:

“Not your baby, Claire.”

Then I asked:

“Whose?”

May you like

Caroline whispered:

“Mine.”
