Chapter 14 - Caroline's Wedding Gift

Caroline had not returned for Ethan.

That was the lie beneath nearly everything she told us.

She returned for me.

“Why?”

She looked exhausted.

“Because Robert contacted me six months ago.”

Robert was alive.

That part was true.

He told Caroline my upcoming marriage to Ethan would activate joint control over the Hawthorne archive.

Robert wanted the records released.

Not suppressed.

He had spent nineteen years assembling enough evidence to expose the original birth-record scheme without destroying the privacy of innocent families.

Then why remain hidden?

Because one person involved was still powerful enough to bury the evidence.

“Who?”

Caroline looked at Eleanor.

My grandmother didn’t flinch.

Not her.

Eleanor had helped conceal births but later cooperated with Robert.

The remaining person was Dr. Charles Voss.

Founder of the Hawthorne maternity program.

Ninety-one.

Still alive.

And chairman emeritus of the hospital network that now owned St. Vincent.

That explained the old medication.

The altered electronic records.

The hospital bracelet.

Access.

Voss’s people had recognized Ethan when he entered the hospital.

B-17.

They knew the marriage had activated Robert’s archive rights.

The fake sibling report was designed to destroy our marriage immediately.

Caroline infiltrated the wedding because Robert believed Voss would make a move that night.

“What about drugging me?”

“I didn't.”

“Then who did?”

Caroline looked at Margaret.

Margaret shook her head.

Then Ethan remembered the champagne flute I broke.

It had been handed to me by a server.

The cut occurred seconds later.

What if the drug wasn’t introduced afterward?

Investigators recovered wedding-service footage.

A catering employee had applied something to the rim of one glass.

Not enough to knock me unconscious immediately.

A delayed sedative.

Then the vial breaking against my cut intensified the effect accidentally.

The server was identified.

Former St. Vincent orderly.

Connected to Voss.

For the first time, the immediate events had a coherent explanation.

Caroline came to warn us.

I found her.

Opened the chest.

Learned enough to panic.

The pre-dosed champagne plus accidental exposure caused my collapse.

Ethan took me to the hospital.

St. Vincent recognized B-17.

Susan secretly gave doctors information about my prior drug sensitivity while hiding her involvement.

Ethan received the threatening message.

He brought me home.

Margaret took my place in bed to watch for Caroline.

And the reddish-brown stain?

Not evidence of some horrifying act between mother and son.

My blood.

From my reopened palm.

Transferred from the veil onto the sheet when Ethan carried me upstairs briefly before taking me to the hospital.

The most grotesque-looking clue had the simplest explanation.

But the real mystery remained.

Where was Robert?

Caroline answered:

“He was supposed to meet me after the wedding.”

He never arrived.

At 4:02 a.m., Caroline received one message from him.

VOSS KNOWS.

Then nothing.

Ethan stared at her.

“You think Voss has him?”

“I think Robert went to St. Vincent voluntarily.”

“Why?”

“To retrieve the original B-17 mapping ledger.”

Then Eleanor whispered:

“He won’t find it there.”

Everyone turned.

“Why?”

My grandmother reached beneath her sweater.

Around her neck was a tiny metal capsule.

“I took it thirty-five years ago.”

Inside was a microfilm strip.

The original Hawthorne birth map.

Every mother.

Every infant.

Every altered placement.

Ethan stared.

“You had the truth this whole time?”

“Yes.”

“Why hide it?”

Eleanor looked ashamed.

“Because one name on it frightened me more than Voss.”

She unfolded the magnified copy.

Baby 17.

Ethan.

Mother:

Rebecca Cole.

Father:

Robert Harper.

Exactly as she said.

Then she pointed lower.

Baby 11.

Daniel Cole.

Mother:

Margaret Cole.

Father:

Andrew Cole.

Status:

Transferred to Bennett family.

Susan gasped.

“What?”

Bennett.

My family.

Margaret’s missing biological son had been adopted by one of my relatives.

May you like

Then Eleanor whispered:

“You know him.”
