Chapter 6 - Emma Finally Admitted the Plan

Emma’s confession did not come all at once.
It came in pieces.
Perhaps because telling the entire truth at once would have required her to look directly at what she had done to Lily.
Ethan sat across from her in their bedroom while Lily slept at Grace’s apartment under temporary family supervision.
Emma had requested that arrangement.
Ethan had found the choice strange.
Now he found everything strange.
“Did you pick up your old prescription?”
Emma stared at the carpet.
“Yes.”
The answer cut deeper than another denial would have.
“Why?”
“I wanted evidence.”
“Evidence of what?”
“That Eleanor was secretly giving it to me.”
Ethan stood.
“You wanted to frame my mother.”
“No.”
“That is literally what you just said.”
Emma’s voice rose.
“I wanted to see if she would use it!”
“How?”
Emma pressed both hands against her face.
Grace had told her about the old accusation.
Not the entire story.
Only that years ago Eleanor had controlled Grace’s medication and Grace had become convinced something was wrong.
Grace never told Emma she had planted evidence herself.
“She told me your mother had done this before.”
Ethan’s anger shifted.
“She told you that?”
“She told me Eleanor interfered with her pregnancy.”
Emma explained that she had become afraid after finding Eleanor in her bathroom.
She began wondering whether the dizziness she had experienced was natural.
Grace suggested a test.
Not poisoning herself.
Not secretly taking medication.
Simply obtaining the old tablets, placing the bottle somewhere Eleanor might find it, and seeing what happened.
“If she touched it, we’d know.”
“That proves nothing.”
“I know that now.”
“What happened to the bottle?”
“It disappeared.”
“When?”
“Two weeks ago.”
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
Emma laughed bitterly.
“Because you would have said I misplaced it.”
Ethan could not honestly say she was wrong.
That hurt too.
“So you got the medication.”
“Yes.”
“You put the bottle in the bathroom.”
“Yes.”
“And then?”
“It vanished.”
“Did you crush anything? Put anything in food?”
“No.”
“On the spoon?”
“No.”
She looked him directly in the eye.
“No.”
Ethan believed she believed herself.
That was not the same as believing her.
Then he asked about the staged collapse.
Emma cried before answering.
She had planned it with no one except herself, she said.
Grace had encouraged her to make Ethan witness Eleanor’s behavior but did not know the exact plan.
Emma put lemon water in the vial.
She told Lily that if Eleanor became aggressive, Lily should run in and beg her to stop.
She intended to fake weakness after Eleanor pressured her.
Then Ethan was supposed to return from work early because Emma had asked him to.
“You knew I was coming?”
“Yes.”
“So when I burst through that door—”
“I had texted you that something was wrong.”
Ethan remembered.
He had seen the half-written message:
Please come home. Your mother is—
Then nothing.
He had left immediately.
Emma had planned his arrival.
She had planned her fainting.
She had involved Lily.
She had expected Ethan to see Eleanor’s cruelty.
But she had not planned Lily’s fall.
And she had not planned Eleanor to force an actual spoonful into her mouth.
“What were you going to tell me afterward?”
“The truth.”
Ethan stared.
“That you faked it?”
Emma lowered her eyes.
“Eventually.”
He almost laughed.
The word eventually was destroying his family.
Then Emma admitted something else.
When Lily smiled and showed the vial, that had been their signal.
The performance was over.
Eleanor was gone.
They had won.
That was why Emma smiled.
Then Eleanor screamed.
CHECK THE SPOON.
“And you were afraid,” Ethan said.
Emma nodded.
“Because I knew there shouldn’t be anything on it.”
“Unless you put it there.”
“I didn’t.”
Ethan believed one thing now.
The scene in the living room contained two separate deceptions.
Emma’s staged collapse.
And someone else’s interference with the spoon.
They might be connected.
They might not.
Then Detective Bell called.
The missing blue spoon had been found.
Not in the kitchen.
Not in a cabinet.
Not in the trash.
May you like
It was inside Lily’s pale-blue backpack.
And Lily said she had never put it there.
