Chapter 11 - The Woman Behind the Wall

There was no hidden passage.
No secret room.
The explanation was simpler.
And more troubling.
The Parker living room shared a wall with Ethan’s study.
A narrow decorative opening near the built-in shelves had once held an intercom.
The system had been removed years earlier, but the wall cavity remained.
Sound carried through it.
A person inside the study could hear much of what happened in the living room.
Grace knew that.
She had grown up in the house.
Security footage showed her entering the study at 12:04 p.m. on the day of the incident.
She left at 12:19.
The confrontation happened nearly three hours later.
So the drawing did not prove Grace was there.
But police found something beneath the desk.
A small wireless audio recorder.
Not transmitting live.
Recording.
Grace denied placing it.
Ethan stared at her.
“You expect me to believe that?”
“Yes.”
“Why was it in my study?”
“I don’t know.”
Bell checked it.
The device had recorded several conversations over five days.
Emma arguing with Eleanor.
Eleanor complaining to Rosa.
Ethan speaking privately with Gabriel.
Lily singing.
And Grace talking to Emma.
The recording captured Grace saying:
“He won’t understand until he sees the difference between what she says and what she does.”
Emma replied:
“I need her gone before the baby comes.”
Grace:
“Then stop waiting for Ethan to make the decision.”
Damning.
But not proof Grace knew about the staged faint.
Then another recording.
Emma alone.
Talking on the phone.
“I can fake being dizzy. That’s all.”
Pause.
“No, Lily won’t be hurt.”
Pause.
“I know.”
Bell enhanced the audio.
The other side of the call was not captured.
Emma refused to say who she had been speaking with.
Ethan felt something in him crack.
“You told me you planned this alone.”
Emma stared at the floor.
“I did.”
“You were talking to someone.”
“They didn’t plan it.”
“Who?”
Emma began crying.
“It doesn’t matter.”
“Everything matters now.”
Finally:
“Grace.”
Grace’s face changed.
“No.”
Emma looked at her.
“It was you.”
“No.”
“You told me not to involve Lily.”
“I never had that call with you.”
Emma froze.
Grace reached for her phone.
Call records showed no conversation at the time of the recording.
Emma’s phone had made a call.
But not to Grace.
The number belonged to a prepaid line.
Unregistered.
The call lasted four minutes.
Bell asked Emma again.
“Who?”
Emma shook her head.
“I thought it was Grace.”
Every person in the room stared.
“What does that mean?” Ethan asked.
Emma explained.
She had received a message earlier that morning from an unknown number:
Need to talk where Ethan won’t see. Call this number.
The message ended with:
—G
Emma assumed Grace.
The voice on the call was distorted by poor connection.
Female.
Soft.
Familiar enough.
She discussed the fake dizziness.
The caller warned her:
Don’t let Lily get near Eleanor.
Emma ignored that part and later involved Lily anyway.
Grace looked sick.
“Someone pretended to be me?”
Bell did not answer.
The prepaid number had been activated two weeks earlier.
Purchased with cash.
But the phone connected repeatedly to one Wi-Fi network.
Not Grace’s apartment.
Not Ethan’s house.
Eleanor’s home.
Everyone turned toward Eleanor.
She stared back.
“No.”
Bell asked:
“Who has your Wi-Fi password?”
Eleanor almost laughed.
“My family.”
“Anyone else?”
“Rosa. Grace. Ethan.”
Emma whispered:
“And Lily.”
May you like
A phone pretending to be Grace had been operating from Eleanor’s house.
Now the grandmother who had spent days appearing less guilty had become the center of the mystery again.
