Chapter 9 - Margaret’s Forty Million
Margaret personally controlled substantial family wealth separate from Vance Medical.
Real estate.
Investments.
Inherited assets.
Approximately forty million dollars.
Her prior estate plan divided:
50% Daniel,
30% Ryan,
20% charitable foundation.
If Daniel died before her, his share passed to Emma.
That did not benefit Margaret directly.
Then three days before Daniel disappeared, Margaret executed a new trust amendment.
If Daniel died while under investigation for financial misconduct, his share would not pass to Emma.
It would be redirected to Ryan until Emma reached thirty, with Ryan acting trustee.
Why?
Margaret claimed asset protection.
But Ryan’s messages showed something else.
Ryan:
If Daniel is officially dead before federal charges, clause works.
Margaret:
Only if theft allegation exists.
Ryan:
We have documents.
Margaret:
Then make sure timeline is clean.
There.
Fake death was not only about company.
It repositioned family wealth.
But did this mean Margaret intended Daniel permanently dead?
Evidence suggested she believed they could keep him hidden, eventually declare mistaken identification after money/control rearranged? That was absurd but consistent with earlier cover-up mentality.
Ryan said plan changed repeatedly.
At first:
hold Daniel for 48 hours.
Force resignation.
Frame him as thief.
Then fake escape abroad.
Thomas’s capture created wrong-body opportunity.
Margaret proposed death narrative.
Ryan escalated.
Charles resisted but eventually assisted.
No single architect of everything.
Then Ryan’s cooperation.
He admitted striking? We can keep non-graphic: He physically restrained Daniel and ordered underground confinement. He did not intend kill.
He claimed second coffin prepared for Sarah was “pressure prop,” not actual plan to kill her.
Prosecutors did not simply believe him.
Why identification packet then?
Ryan said Margaret intended to threaten Sarah with staged suicide story unless she signed.
Still criminal coercion.
No evidence they planned actual death.
Important not overreach.
Then six employee photos?
Daniel had placed those in underground room? Wait earlier police found on wall and video showed them. Who put there? We assumed Daniel discovered? It said wall with six framed photos. Could have been Ryan/Charles? Better clarify: Daniel later reveals he had requested copies of the six employee files; Ryan placed photographs on wall to intimidate him after finding his investigation, saying “These people are gone, company survived.” That is chilling but not necessarily admission killing. Let's integrate.
Daniel recalled Ryan telling him:
“Look at them. Every one thought they were bigger than company.”
Could imply intimidation.
Then Ryan explained at proffer:
he used photos because Daniel had been investigating those cases, wanted scare him into stopping.
“Did you mean family killed them?”
“No.”
“Did you know Martin died after confrontation with Ryan Trent?”
“Yes.”
“Peter?”
“I suspected Trent did something to truck.”
“Did you report?”
“No.”
Again culpability.
Then criminal resolutions developed.
Margaret pleaded guilty to significant fraud/obstruction/coercion-related offenses and admitted participation in fake-death scheme and forged insurance/trust documents.
Ryan Vance pleaded guilty to unlawful confinement, fraud conspiracy, obstruction and related counts, receiving consideration for substantial cooperation but still meaningful sentence.
Charles pleaded guilty to major financial fraud and obstruction/conspiracy counts, with facts distinguishing he did not initiate physical confinement but knowingly allowed and later helped conceal.
Ryan Trent faced separate serious charges including reckless homicide-type responsibility for Martin Shaw's death, witness intimidation, obstruction.
Michael Trent faced lesser criminal/professional consequences after cooperation, including law-license discipline, because he prepared fraudulent documents and delayed reporting while later helping Daniel escape.
No one “walked free” because they helped later.
Then company.
Vance Medical Distribution entered deferred/settlement arrangement? Better: company paid major restitution and civil penalties, independent monitor, new board, because leadership crimes infected operations. Some contracts suspended. Employees not all punished.
Daniel resigned as CFO voluntarily before board review finished.
Sarah surprised.
“This was your career.”
“It was built inside a system I failed to question.”
“You didn’t create fraud.”
“No. But I signed reports.”
He wanted rebuild elsewhere later.
Not instant chairman hero.
Then Emma.
Therapist recommended no media.
Reporters outside house.
Sarah refused interviews.
Margaret’s lawyers tried public narrative:
grieving mother manipulated by sons.
Evidence contradicted partial.
Sarah would not wage PR war.
Then Emma asked to visit Daniel’s underground room.
Sarah said no initially.
Daniel said also no.
Therapist later suggested child need not see trauma site to understand.
Good.
Emma instead asked:
“Can we get rid of the coffin?”
Evidence retained until released.
Eventually funeral home took it as evidence storage? The coffin belongs investigation. Later it was disposed/donated? Once returned, Sarah requested destruction after legal release.
But Daniel’s phone?
Kept after forensic copies.
Emma refused to use ringtone again.
She changed it.
Good.
Then Sarah received update on father’s trust restitution.
Civil court found strong evidence of breach.
Settlement from Charles’s assets could restore substantial amount.
Sarah directed recovered funds into:
her own financial independence,
Emma education trust,
legal/medical recovery costs.
Not donated all dramatically.
She had been financially harmed.
She was allowed restoration.
Then one day Daniel found Emma sitting beside empty cardboard box.
“What?”
“I’m practicing.”
“For?”
“Not being scared of boxes.”
He sat.
“Want me here?”
“Yes.”
They sat beside box.
No forced exposure to coffin.
Small.
Then Daniel said:
“I’m sorry I didn’t call you first when I escaped.”
Emma looked at him.
“I was mad.”
“I know.”
“I thought you chose police stuff over us.”
“I did, for several hours.”
“Why?”
“I was scared if your grandmother knew I was alive, she’d destroy evidence.”
“Was that worth it?”
Daniel looked at her.
“No.”
Honest.
“I should have found a way to tell you I was safe.”
Emma nodded.
“Okay.”
Not instant forgiveness speech.
Then she hugged him.
That evening federal investigator called Daniel.
One piece still unresolved:
Peter Walsh’s crash.
A former Sentinel mechanic had come forward.
He claimed Ryan Trent ordered him to “make Peter’s truck unreliable.”
Not kill him.
“Something that strands him.”
The mechanic altered brake system.
But the modification caused catastrophic failure.
Ryan Trent had never told Charles.
