Chapter 14 - Subject Zero

Robert Whitmore was not merely the man who funded W-17.

He was its first successful patient.

He never knew.

At age six, Robert suffered a severe spinal injury after falling from a horse.

Family history said he recovered unexpectedly.

Months of rehabilitation.

Exceptional luck.

Miriam's diary revealed the truth.

Robert's mother used an experimental regenerative compound on him.

The precursor to W-17.

He recovered completely.

No lasting paralysis.

Then grew into an unusually strong, healthy man.

Thomas did not receive the treatment.

That difference obsessed their mother.

Why did Robert respond perfectly?

Why did later patients develop complications?

The family spent decades trying to reproduce Robert's response.

Thomas resented being the untreated brother.

Marianne was raised inside the program to study developmental effects.

Miriam inherited its legal structure.

Victor became fetal Subject W17-04.

Emma's baby represented something unprecedented:

a direct descendant of Subject Zero—

Emma through Robert—

conceived with a successfully treated fetal subject—

Victor.

Two successful branches converging naturally.

That was why Marianne waited.

Not money.

Not revenge alone.

Proof.

If Emma's child inherited the regenerative response without treatment, Marianne could prove W-17 had produced heritable biological changes.

Robert felt violated across sixty-two years of memory.

His strength.

His recovery.

His mother's pride.

How much had been family?

How much observation?

But Miriam's diary contained one more warning.

Marianne is wrong about Robert.

Robert leaned closer.

His treatment records had been switched.

He was not the child who received the compound.

Thomas was.

Robert stared.

Impossible.

But childhood hospital records confirmed two boys were admitted after the riding accident.

Robert fell.

Thomas tried to help.

Both were injured.

Their mother treated Thomas experimentally.

Robert recovered naturally after surgery.

Thomas was Subject Zero.

Everyone had built W-17 around the wrong brother.

Why?

Their mother deliberately switched records after seeing Thomas develop subtle neurological symptoms.

She protected him by labeling Robert as the treated child.

For decades researchers studied Robert's healthy biology thinking it reflected successful treatment.

It didn't.

The entire scientific premise was contaminated from the beginning.

Marianne had spent her life chasing a false control.

Victor's successful fetal treatment was real.

But the theory linking him to Robert was false.

Emma's baby was not the culmination Marianne believed.

Robert almost laughed.

Generations of suffering.

Built partly on a mislabeled chart.

Then Michael noticed something.

“If Marianne learns this, the experiment becomes worthless.”

Robert understood.

“We tell her.”

They broadcast Miriam's diary and original records through every channel Marianne monitored.

Hours passed.

Then Robert's phone rang.

Marianne.

No voice modulation now.

A woman's voice.

Almost Miriam's.

“You're lying.”

“No.”

“Thomas was untreated.”

“No.”

“You were Subject Zero.”

“No.”

Silence.

Robert said:

“You built your life around the wrong child.”

Marianne's breathing changed.

Then she whispered:

“Then Emma's baby is useless.”

Robert's blood went cold.

That was not relief.

Because to Marianne, useless things were disposable.

At the hospital, an alarm began sounding.

Emma's room camera went black.
