Chapter 10 - Robert's First Mistake

Robert did not ask Emma to forgive him.

He explained.

Michael had been a battlefield physician.

Brilliant.

He saved Robert's life overseas.

When Miriam needed a specialist, Robert brought him in.

Michael met Thomas.

Together they accelerated the program.

Robert saw only promising results.

Then W17-04.

Victor.

The fetal cardiac procedure worked.

But Anna nearly died.

Thomas wanted more trials.

Michael initially agreed.

Miriam stopped them.

Robert sided with her.

Thomas became furious.

Michael disappeared with Victor.

Then Thomas vanished.

Then Miriam died.

Robert spent twenty-six years believing the program ended.

It hadn't.

He had simply stopped looking.

Emma asked:

“Why?”

Robert struggled.

“Because I had you.”

After Miriam died, Emma was two.

Robert chose fatherhood over investigation.

Understandable.

But consequences remained.

He never learned who survived.

Who carried the work forward.

Who watched Victor.

Who watched Claire.

Emma said softly:

“You protected me by looking away.”

Robert closed his eyes.

“Yes.”

That was his flaw.

Not secret villainy.

Protection so absolute it sometimes became blindness.

Then a hospital nurse entered.

“Mr. Whitmore?”

“Yes?”

“There's a man downstairs asking for you.”

“Name?”

“Michael Hale.”

Victor stood so quickly his chair fell.

They went downstairs.

An old man waited in the chapel.

Seventy-six.

Thin.

White hair.

But Victor recognized him instantly.

“Dad.”

Michael turned.

His face broke.

“Victor.”

Victor did not hug him.

“Twenty years.”

“I know.”

“You let me think you were dead.”

“I know.”

“You watched me?”

Michael cried.

“At first.”

“Was any of it real?”

Michael's answer came immediately.

“You were.”

Victor's eyes filled.

Michael explained his disappearance.

Thomas discovered he was sabotaging W-17.

Michael faked his death.

Anna helped.

They spent years gathering evidence.

Then Anna died before they could expose everything.

Michael remained hidden because Thomas believed he possessed the only complete archive.

“Where is Thomas?”

Michael shook his head.

“Thomas isn't your problem anymore.”

Robert stepped closer.

“Who is?”

Michael looked at Emma's pregnant belly.

“Miriam.”

Silence.

Robert's voice became dangerous.

“My wife is dead.”

Michael nodded.

“Yes.”

“Then explain.”

Michael reached into his coat.

A photograph.

Miriam's body after the fire.

Robert recognized her.

Then a second photograph.

A woman standing behind observation glass three months later.

Same face.

Same eyes.

May you like

Miriam.

Alive.
