Chapter 6 - Melissa’s Photograph

Melissa surrendered when police approached.
She carried no weapon.
Only photographs.
Dozens.
Sophie leaving pediatric appointments.
Sophie in Emma’s garden.
Sophie through mansion windows.
Someone had been sending them to Melissa.
Along with letters:
YOUR DAUGHTER IS LIVING AS SOPHIE.
ELEANOR TOOK HER.
THE CHILD CALLED ROSE IS NOT YOURS.
All false.
DNA proved.
Melissa cried when shown results.
“So Rose is mine?”
“Yes.”
“And Sophie?”
“Emma’s.”
Melissa covered face.
Someone had spent nearly a year manipulating grieving, unstable mother.
Why?
Investigators examined letters.
Postmarks from three states.
Printer common.
No fingerprints.
But one phrase repeated:
SHE NEVER SHOULD HAVE BEEN ALLOWED TO COME HOME.
Same wording Eleanor shouted.
Emma turned toward her.
“Did you write these?”
“No.”
“How did you know phrase?”
Eleanor looked startled.
“I say that about Sophie because—”
She stopped.
Because what?
Eleanor admitted phrase came from anonymous text she received that afternoon:
SOPHIE SHOULD NEVER HAVE BEEN ALLOWED TO COME HOME.
So she repeated it during panic.
Who sent?
Same unknown sender manipulating Melissa.
Thus someone orchestrated both sides.
Claire had also received message directing her to driveway.
Someone wanted all three women there.
Someone wanted blue bin involved.
Why?
Perhaps recreate past event.
Then forensic examination of false-bottom bin found initials:
R.G.
Not new.
Scratched years earlier.
The bin had belonged to mansion before Emma moved in.
Eleanor recognized initials.
“Rebecca Grant.”
Melissa froze.
“My sister.”
Melissa had a sister?
Older.
Rebecca died fourteen years ago.
Car accident.
Why would her initials be in Emma’s trash bin?
Eleanor explained Rebecca once worked at mansion.
For previous owners.
The property had belonged to Bennett family? We have surname collision. Emma maybe Emma Bennett? Prompt just Emma, no surname. We can define mansion belonged to her late husband? Avoid.
Eleanor’s family had owned mansion for decades.
Rebecca Grant worked as nanny for them.
Melissa was much younger.
Why did Rebecca scratch initials inside trash bin?
Unknown.
Then Melissa revealed:
“Rebecca was the reason I used Bennett as fake name.”
Everyone stared.
Before dying, Rebecca had told Melissa:
“If you ever need to disappear, use Bennett.”
Why?
Melissa didn’t know.
She thought it was random surname from Rebecca’s old employer.
But perhaps not.
Then Claire remembered something.
Eleven months earlier, Melissa requested her as patient advocate using referral code:
RG17.
Rebecca Grant 17.
Old code.
Claire had assumed legal-clinic referral.
Who gave Melissa code?
Anonymous email.
Someone had guided her toward St. Catherine’s, Bennett surname, Claire, and eventually Eleanor before baby was even born.
This was not random clerical coincidence anymore.
Someone engineered the surname collision.
Not the babies.
Their identities remained biologically clear.
But circumstances were manipulated.
Then Emma asked:
“Why?”
No answer.
Until police searched Rebecca’s old employment file at mansion.
One sealed note.
Written fourteen years ago:
IF MELISSA EVER HAS A DAUGHTER, DO NOT LET ELEANOR RAISE HER.
Signed Rebecca Grant.
Eleanor stared.
“She never told me this.”
Melissa whispered:
“Why would my sister care who raised my future child?”
Emma looked toward Rose’s monitor.
The mystery had moved beyond the bin.
May you like
Someone had been following instructions left by a dead nanny.
And Eleanor was clearly part of whatever Rebecca had feared.
