Chapter 13 - The First Time Eleanor Hid Sophie

During St. Catherine’s outage, a transport aide pushed Sophie’s bassinet toward wrong elevator.

Not malicious.

The system displayed Bennett infant transfer to neonatal observation—information belonging to Rose.

The aide followed screen.

Eleanor saw Sophie’s white cap and recognized her.

She shouted.

The aide stopped.

Nurses became confused because another Bennett baby existed.

Eleanor panicked.

Rather than wait, she lifted Sophie from bassinet and stepped into adjacent clean-linen alcove.

Claire saw her place Sophie—still wrapped and supported—inside an empty deep linen cart for roughly forty seconds while nurse reset trackers.

Was it appropriate?

No.

Was Sophie physically injured?

No.

Did it prevent wrong transport?

Possibly.

But Eleanor took control without permission.

Claire said:

“She kept saying, ‘I’m not letting them take this baby.’”

Emma asked:

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

“You had just come out of surgery.”

“Later?”

“Hospital confirmed bracelets and DNA blood-type compatibility. I thought telling you would only scare you.”

Again.

Emma laughed sadly.

“So my whole life is people deciding what information I can handle.”

Claire nodded.

“Yes.”

Then why did Eleanor hide this event for eleven months?

Hospital liability.

Embarrassment.

And fear Emma would prevent contact with Sophie.

She was probably right.

But hiding made current event worse.

When Claire saw Eleanor carrying Sophie toward blue bin, she immediately recognized pattern:

fear → container → conceal child → explain later.

That was why she shouted:

“That isn’t the first place Eleanor put Sophie.”

Not because Sophie had been hidden repeatedly in secret institutions.

Two specific episodes.

Hospital linen cart.

Driveway bin.

Same coping pattern.

Then Emma asked Claire:

“Why didn't you say that immediately when I ran outside?”

“I was following Evelyn’s text.”

That answer was not good enough.

Claire knew.

Then Emma turned to Eleanor.

“Did you ever put Sophie anywhere else?”

“No.”

“Rose?”

“Blue bin once, lower compartment, for less than a minute.”

“Any other child?”

Eleanor hesitated.

“In foster years, yes.”

“How many?”

“Three.”

Each case reviewed.

One car trunk briefly.

One laundry cart.

One utility bin.

All while avoiding suspected abusers.

No child physically harmed.

But methods were unsafe and outside protocol.

Rebecca’s files documented them.

That was why she feared future children in Eleanor’s sole care.

Then current legal consequences became clear.

Eleanor was prohibited from unsupervised caregiving.

She did not contest.

“I shouldn’t be alone with babies when I panic.”

Emma appreciated one thing:

Finally, no excuse.

Then Sophie’s role became simple.

She was Emma’s biological daughter.

Never swapped.

Never rejected at birth.

Never secret twin.

Rose was Melissa’s biological daughter.

The babies were connected only by same temporary surname at same hospital, manipulated by Rebecca’s old contingency plan and Evelyn Shaw’s obsession.

The two cries were one physical Sophie in bin and one remote Rose through monitor.

No second baby hidden inside mansion.

No clone.

No impossible identity twist.

Then Claire asked:

“Why did Eleanor look toward house in terror?”

Eleanor answered:

“Because when I heard Rose crying through monitor, I realized someone had entered my old suite.”

Exactly.

She knew camera receiver should not be active.

That meant security breach.

Her terror was not about second baby’s identity.

It was about somebody inside mansion.

Margaret Grant.

Everything finally aligned.

Then Melissa opened another file in Rebecca’s storage room.

Rebecca had written:

IF SOPHIE AND ROSE EVER MEET, DO NOT LET ANYONE CALL THEM SISTERS.

Emma frowned.

“Why would anyone?”

No blood relation.

Then next line:

THEIR CONNECTION IS NOT BLOOD.

“It is St. Catherine’s.”

Below:

BOTH CHILDREN ARE BENEFICIARIES OF THE SAME ACCOUNT.

Emma stared.

“What account?”

Rebecca wrote this before either baby existed.

Impossible.

Unless “Sophie and Rose” were not names Rebecca wrote originally.

Closer inspection revealed they were annotations added recently.

By Evelyn Shaw.

Original:

IF MELISSA’S CHILD AND BENNETT CHILD EVER MEET…

Same account.

Which account?

A trust Rebecca established.

Why would future unrelated children share it?

Now a new financial question appeared—but it still connected to current manipulation.

They needed solve it before closing arc.
