Chapter 8 - The Man Tyler Called Grandpa
Tyler called two men Grandpa.
Samuel Carter had died.
The other was Brooke’s stepfather:
Martin Shaw.
Seventy-one.
Former attorney.
And, decades earlier, junior counsel to Charles Whitman.
Another connection.
Martin had married Brooke’s mother after Samuel died.
He had access to Samuel’s papers.
He was likely source of Brooke’s trust knowledge.
Martin admitted visiting Richard’s house while Amanda was away.
Brooke let him in.
Why?
To inspect family portrait.
He believed safe was behind it.
Did he open?
“No.”
Combination?
He knew old Charles pattern but not full sequence.
Then $950,000 transfer.
Martin denied.
Digital evidence eventually showed remote malware? Better not cyber overly technical. Richard had left signed payment authorization templates on home office printer? Could be. Brooke used one? Let's keep financial forgery.
Signature was copied from an old authorization.
Bank ultimately blocked transfer before settlement because account name mismatch.
So no money lost.
Who attempted?
Document originated from Brooke’s laptop.
Brooke claimed Martin used it.
Martin claimed Brooke.
Mother and stepfather turned on each other.
Then Amanda realized Richard had surrounded himself with people willing to lie because he was already lying.
Affair had created access.
Then Martin explained safe history.
Charles commissioned it after Thomas died.
He placed original corporate records inside because several parties disputed ownership.
Martin witnessed.
“What records?”
“Share certificates. Trust schedules. Settlement documents.”
“Anything else?”
Martin hesitated.
“A letter.”
“From whom?”
“Thomas Avery.”
“To me?”
“Yes.”
“Why didn't anyone give it to me?”
“Charles said conditions hadn't been met.”
“What conditions?”
“I never saw letter.”
Convenient.
Then Martin dropped larger clue.
Safe had two compartments.
One opened with combination.
Second required physical key.
Where key?
Charles gave it to someone.
Martin thought Richard.
Richard denied ever receiving.
Brooke believed Samuel had it.
After Samuel died, no key found.
Then Amanda remembered Ethan’s missing sock.
Odd detail from confrontation.
When she picked him up, he had one sock.
Where was other?
Back at house, a housekeeper found it beneath fireplace cabinet.
Beside it:
A small brass object.
Not safe key.
A luggage tag from Brooke’s sports? No. Let's make an old brass token stamped A-17.
Amanda recognized nothing.
Martin did.
“Avery factory locker token.”
Number 17 belonged Thomas Avery.
Why was it under fireplace?
Someone had dropped it recently.
Brooke?
Richard?
Tyler?
Ethan?
Then Tyler said he found token behind sofa and gave it to Ethan because “it looked like pirate money.”
So token had been loose in living room before confrontation.
How got there?
Brooke’s bag contained old Samuel papers.
Maybe fell.
Token led to archived storage facility containing surviving Avery factory lockers.
Locker 17 still existed in warehouse museum storage.
Inside:
Empty.
Except one note.
Thomas’s handwriting:
CHARLES HAS THE CERTIFICATES.
SAM HAS THE KEY.
MARGARET HAS THE TRUTH.
Charles = Richard’s father.
Sam = Brooke’s father.
Margaret = original attorney/trustee.
All dead.
Three pieces separated intentionally.
But beneath note was newer handwriting.
Someone had opened locker after Thomas died.
One sentence:
AND AMANDA HAS NO IDEA.
