Land records answered.
Thomas Avery purchased an option on the property in 2001.
He never exercised.
Years later Charles did.
Then after Richard and Amanda married, Charles arranged for Avery trust to purchase house and let couple live there.
Why this exact property?
It wasn't sentimental family home.
No factory.
No buried treasure.
Then old municipal map.
The property sat beside parcel once owned by Avery Precision pension vehicle.
During 2002 company sale, a land transaction occurred.
A parcel package was sold for $6 million.

Maybe.

So historical wrong potentially huge.
Safe could contain agreement determining who rightfully owned land.
Richard’s fear now made sense.
If agreement invalidated Whitman title, company could face enormous claim.
Brooke’s Carter family could also share restitution.
Amanda could become richer.
Richard poorer.
But Amanda refused assume.
Then Rachel found deed exhibit referencing “Option B.”
Missing.
Original likely safe.
If Thomas voluntarily sold option to Charles, Whitman ownership legitimate.
If not, transfer problematic.
That was binary mystery.
Then day of opening arrived.
Same living room.
Same white sofa.
Same fireplace.
Same portrait.
Amanda insisted Ethan not be present.
Tyler not present.
This was adult matter.
Richard stood near window.
Brooke beside her attorney.
Rachel near Amanda.
Independent fiduciary Phoebe Grant attended.
Martin witnessed.
Amanda looked at family portrait.
It showed Amanda, Richard and Ethan smiling one year earlier.
She almost hated it.
Then realized photograph itself wasn't lie.

She lifted frame.

Brooke whispered combination:

First compartment opened.
Folders.

Samuel settlement.
Margaret affidavit.
Everything expected.
No explosive secret.
Richard exhaled.
Too soon.
Second compartment remained locked.
Martin handed Amanda Samuel’s key.
She inserted.
Wouldn't turn.
Wrong key?
Then Phoebe examined.
“This isn't a key lock.”
“What is it?”
“It's a dual-control mechanism.”
Two pieces needed.
Samuel’s key was half.
Where second?
Richard went pale.
Amanda saw.
“You know.”
Richard slowly reached inside his suit jacket.
Pulled out small brass key.
Amanda stared.
“You told me your father never gave you one.”
“He didn't.”
“Then where did you get it?”
Richard looked at Brooke.
“From her.”
Brooke recoiled.
“I never gave you that.”
Richard placed key down.
“It was in your purse the first night you stayed here.”
Silence.
He had searched mistress’s purse.
Taken key.
Lied to everyone.
Why?
“I was afraid she'd open it first.”
Amanda felt disgust.
“You had both pieces this whole time?”
“No. I didn't know Samuel’s piece existed.”
Then Brooke recognized second key.
“That belonged to my father too.”
Samuel had possessed both halves?
Why separate?
One disappeared after death.
Richard somehow took from Brooke, who didn't know she had it among inherited items.
Now two halves joined.
Amanda turned.
Second compartment clicked.
Inside was not cash.
Not gold.
One red leather folder.
One old cassette.
One sealed envelope:
FOR AMANDA ONLY.
And beneath it—
a document bearing Thomas Avery’s signature.
Richard saw title.
His knees nearly gave way.
Amanda reached toward it.
Rachel stopped her.
“Before you read this, you need to know something.”
“What?”
“We got the final forensic result on Thomas’s signature this morning.”
Amanda stared.
“Is it forged?”
Rachel shook her head.
“No.”
“Then what?”
“The document is authentic.”
Richard whispered:
“Then my father knew.”
Amanda looked at title again.
AGREEMENT OF BENEFICIAL OWNERSHIP AND RESTITUTION.
