Chapter 9 - Northstar Before Julian

Northstar Heritage Holdings had not begun with Julian.

He had revived it.

The original entity was formed by my father and Arthur Hale nearly three decades earlier.

That changed everything.

Not because it excused theft.

It did not.

But because Julian had found something old and repurposed it.

The archived articles of organization listed:

Thomas Navarro.

Arthur Hale.

Equal managers.

Purpose:

holding and recovery of disputed commercial assets.

Maya spent hours reconstructing history.

During the Hale Manufacturing scandal, my father and Arthur created Northstar as a temporary escrow-like holding structure while trying to separate questionable supplier funds from legitimate company operations.

Then Robert Hale sabotaged process.

The entity went dormant.

My father later received settlement.

Northstar remained legally inactive for years.

After both men stopped using it, filings lapsed.

Eighteen months ago, Julian filed reinstatement paperwork and amended ownership to himself and Victoria.

Was that legally valid?

Questionable.

Some required consent from surviving organizer Arthur.

A consent form existed.

Arthur’s signature.

He denied signing.

Another likely forgery.

Julian had not created a new shell out of nowhere.

He weaponized an old joint structure tied to my father.

That gave his “family money” story just enough history to sound plausible to people who didn’t look closely.

Clever.

Then Arthur admitted one thing.

“I should have told you about Northstar when you married Julian.”

“Why didn’t you?”

“Shame.”

Again.

He had spent decades hiding truths to avoid confronting old failures.

That secrecy created fertile ground for new abuse.

“You keep saying shame,” I told him. “At some point it became cowardice.”

Arthur flinched.

Then nodded.

“Yes.”

I respected him more for accepting word.

Then we found Northstar’s original ledger.

My father had personally contributed $110,000 during restructuring effort.

Arthur contributed $160,000.

When entity went dormant, most funds were returned or absorbed into settlement accounting.

No fortune waiting.

No secret inheritance.

Julian’s claim that my family “owed” Hales through Northstar collapsed completely.

He revived a historical vehicle precisely because it looked legitimate.

Then the criminal and civil cases separated into clearer lanes:

Arthur:

possible elder abuse and exploitation.

My company:

forgery, attempted/actual transfer theft, unauthorized access.

Old family records:

historical context, not current entitlement.

My marriage:

divorce.

I filed.

There was no strategic pause.

No ultimatum.

No “maybe counseling after federal investigation.”

Julian had forged me, stolen from my company, participated in framing me for possible neglect of Arthur, and maintained an affair.

Marriage was over.

Maya filed petition with temporary financial restraints.

My house was jointly titled because Julian and I bought it after marriage, despite most down payment coming from me.

So I could not simply throw him out permanently without process.

Temporary exclusive use was granted to me due to ongoing investigation and safety concerns.

I still chose not to live there.

Too contaminated.

Arthur moved into licensed rehabilitation facility temporarily, then planned return to his lake house once legal title issue corrected.

Then a surprise from lake house records.

The property deed transfer to Julian had been notarized by a mobile notary named Evelyn Price.

She voluntarily contacted investigators after seeing news of elder-abuse inquiry.

She said Arthur appeared groggy when she arrived.

Victoria did most talking.

Evelyn asked Arthur directly if he understood transfer.

Arthur said:

“I want my daughter to stop bothering me.”

Ambiguous.

Was that consent?

Not clear.

Evelyn almost refused.

Then Julian joined video call and assured her physician had cleared Arthur.

No clearance existed.

Evelyn completed notarization.

She regretted.

Could be negligence.

Could be rule violation.

Would be reviewed.

Again, no cartoon conspiracy where everyone evil.

Then she remembered one detail.

Arthur whispered something while Victoria stepped away.

“Call Elena.”

Evelyn did not.

She assumed confusion.

Another missed chance.

Then she handed investigators her contemporaneous notes.

One line:

Signer repeatedly asked whether document affected “Elena’s rights.”

Why would Arthur ask that about lake house?

I asked him.

He looked at me for a long moment.

Then said:

“Because the lake house was never meant for Julian.”

“Who was it meant for?”

May you like

He looked ashamed again.

“Your mother.”
