Chapter 7 - Victoria’s Hotel Room

Victoria did not get far.

Not because police staged a dramatic airport takedown.

Because financial institutions are slow when customers want them fast and very fast when fraud teams see litigation, forged authorization, elder exploitation, and preservation orders all at once.

The transfer was suspended.

Victoria remained in a downtown hotel.

Her attorney contacted Maya.

She wanted immunity.

Maya actually laughed.

“She thinks I’m prosecutor.”

Victoria instead offered “complete cooperation” in exchange for us not pursuing civil claims against her.

Not happening.

But we listened.

Through attorneys.

Her story differed from Julian’s.

She said the entire plan began with him.

Julian discovered Arthur was considering estate changes.

He panicked.

He then found old Hale/Navarro records and convinced Victoria that Elena’s company had been built “on money stolen from the Hales.”

False framing.

Victoria admitted she resented me already.

I had always intimidated her.

Not because I was loud.

Because I earned independently.

Julian told her if he moved enough of my company reserve into Northstar, it could later be characterized as repayment connected to the old settlement.

Nonsense legally.

But emotionally convenient.

Then Arthur.

Victoria admitted increasing his medication.

Her justification:

“He wouldn't sleep. He kept wandering.”

Doctors had not authorized increase.

She knew.

She also admitted putting medicine in food when he refused pills.

That crossed a serious line.

“Did you intend to harm him?” her attorney asked before ours could.

“No.”

“Did Julian tell you to overmedicate him?”

“No.”

Important.

She owned that part.

Then confinement.

She said Julian suggested keeping Arthur in back room because it was “safer.”

The chair under door?

“I put it there once.”

“Why?”

“He tried to leave.”

“Why not call doctor?”

“He would have told them I was controlling him.”

Yes.

Because she was.

Then the frame-up.

Who proposed blaming me if Arthur died?

Victoria looked down.

“Julian.”

“Did you agree?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because once things started, we needed an explanation.”

That sentence chilled me.

Once things started.

Not once they planned.

They were improvising defense around escalating misconduct.

Then forged signature.

Julian.

Spoof medical email.

Julian.

Fake board resolution.

Julian.

Northstar.

Julian created.

Victoria accepted ownership.

Both benefited.

The picture sharpened.

Victoria was not innocent.

She financially exploited Arthur.

Misused medication.

Helped confine.

Participated in false narrative.

Tried moving funds.

But Julian was architect of the corporate fraud and identity theft against me.

Then Victoria said:

“There’s something you still don’t know about Elena’s marriage.”

I almost rolled my eyes.

Of course.

She handed her lawyer an email chain.

Julian and a woman named Claire Benton.

I knew Claire.

Chief operating officer at one of our client banks.

Married.

Smart.

Friendly with Julian.

The emails were intimate.

Not explicit at first.

Then unmistakable.

My husband was having an affair.

For at least fourteen months.

Betrayal layered over betrayal until I almost felt numb.

Then one email:

C:

When are you actually leaving Elena?

J:

After Grandpa situation resolves. I need Northstar funded first.

C:

You said that six months ago.

J:

I cannot walk away broke.

There.

He was not stealing only from greed or inherited grievance.

He was building exit money.

Another:

C:

What about house?

J:

Elena keeps it. I don't care. Liquid money matters.

So he wasn’t plotting to take everything.

He was siphoning cash to leave marriage on his own terms.

Then:

C:

And your grandfather?

J:

He complicates timing.

I stared at screen.

No direct threat.

But enough to make every earlier decision uglier.

Victoria looked at me through video conference.

“I’m sorry.”

“For what?”

“For helping my son.”

“That isn't an apology.”

She closed eyes.

“For believing helping him mattered more than what it did to you and Arthur.”

Better.

Still not forgiveness.

Then Maya asked:

“Why reveal affair now?”

Victoria’s answer was simple.

“Because Julian told his lawyer everything was my idea.”

There it was.

May you like

Self-preservation.

Not redemption.
