Chapter 7 - Eleanor’s Ring
Eleanor Whitmore had worn the ring for forty-two years.
Family legend said Gregory gave it to Rachel? Actually mother’s heirloom passed to Daniel after Gregory.
But archival photograph showed Eleanor wearing it beside a much younger woman.
Name:
Margaret Shaw.
Whitmore family bookkeeper.
Margaret disappeared from company records after accusing Gregory of diverting employee profit-sharing money.
No charges.
Settlement sealed.
Then Eleanor privately created restitution ledger.
Could the ring hide evidence?
Maybe.
Claire was beginning to see a pattern: every generation hid truth inside objects instead of simply speaking.
Melissa located Eleanor’s probate memo.

Platinum band with internal microfilm insert — deliver to Gregory only after audit completion.
Audit was never completed publicly.
Gregory kept ring.
Years later gave it to Daniel during his private ceremony with Rachel.

Then what does this have to do with Lily?

So Gregory’s family wealth may have absorbed employee money.
Rachel discovered.
She intended expose.
Victoria resisted because company had since compensated many employees through later programs.

Then “LM-06” payments perhaps weren't Lily.
Could be Legacy Member account 06 for employee restitution.
Another misdirection.
Daniel’s personal financial motive less central.
Then Melissa identified actual missing amount:
$23 million reserve created by Eleanor.
Supposedly held separately.
Current value maybe $51 million.
Where?
Unknown.
Ring microfilm contained bank routing reference.
But hidden insert still sealed.
Claire asked:
“Why would Rachel tell Lily her mother died if she was protecting this?”
Daniel corrected:
“She didn’t.”
He had.
Rachel asked him to say she was “away and couldn’t come home.”
Daniel decided a six-year-old would suffer less with certainty than abandonment.
He told Lily she died.
Unforgivable paternal choice, even if motive emotional.
Rachel found out only recently.
That was why she contacted Lily directly.
That was why she sent ring to Claire.
Not Daniel.
Rachel no longer trusted his judgment.
Then Claire asked:
“Why me?”
Anna answered:
“Because Rachel thought you were the first person Daniel might actually listen to.”
Claire laughed sadly.
Too late.
Then Lily tugged Claire’s hand.
“Mommy said you had to read the inside before you open the little part.”
Order mattered.
Engraving first.
Insert second.
Claire held ring under light.
Her thumb still covered words.
This time she moved it halfway.

CLAIRE.
