Chapter 1 - The Bride Who Stopped Smiling
Claire had been smiling for photographs when Lily screamed.
The six-year-old flower girl stumbled across the ballroom barefoot, floral crown slipping sideways, tears already streaking her cheeks. Behind her, Daniel was moving fast.
“Please… don’t let him take me.”
Lily collided with Claire and wrapped both arms around her waist.
Claire’s wedding smile vanished.
“What happened?”
Daniel reached them and immediately grabbed for Lily.
The little girl shrieked and twisted behind Claire.
“Why is she afraid of you?” Claire asked.
“Give her to me.”
Daniel caught Lily’s arm.
Claire knocked his hand away.
“Daniel, stop!”
His face hardened.
The guests nearest them fell quiet.
Daniel tried again.
Lily screamed.
Claire shoved him back hard enough that he crashed into the banquet table. Plates and glasses scattered while guests recoiled.
Claire lifted Lily into her arms.
Daniel stared at her as if she had betrayed him.
“She doesn’t know what she’s talking about.”
Claire walked toward the microphone.
“Then she can tell me.”
The ballroom became silent.
Claire held Lily close.
“Tell me the truth.”
Lily looked at Daniel.
“He said Mommy died in the accident.”
Claire knew that story.
Everyone did.
Lily’s mother, Rachel Morgan, had supposedly died eighteen months earlier after a highway crash.
Daniel had become Lily’s legal guardian afterward because Rachel’s husband had already died years before and Daniel was Rachel’s closest surviving relative.
At least that was what Claire had been told.
Then Lily whispered:
“But I saw her yesterday.”
Daniel’s jaw tightened.
Claire stared.
“What?”
Lily reached beneath her dress and pulled out a woman’s wedding ring hanging from a thin chain.
“Mommy gave me this.”
Daniel’s face changed instantly.
Not confusion.
Recognition.
Panic.
Claire turned the ring over.
There was engraving inside.
Daniel moved toward her.
“Claire… don’t read that.”
Claire froze.
Why would a dead woman’s wedding ring frighten her groom?
She started moving her thumb.
Daniel suddenly said:
“If you read that out loud, this wedding is over.”
Claire looked at him.
Then at Lily.
Then at the ring.

The wedding was already over.
What Claire didn’t yet know was that the engraving could destroy far more than a marriage.
