Chapter 8 - The Name Before Mercer

My birth name was Emma Rose Callahan.
Callahan.
The same surname as Ruth, the nurse who helped Caleb escape.
I called her.
Ruth went silent.
Then:
“I wondered when this would come back.”
She was not my mother.
She clarified immediately.
My biological mother was her younger sister.
Name:
Laura Callahan.
Age nineteen when she gave birth.
Biological father:
unknown on the original record.
Laura struggled with addiction at the time.
Diane and Richard had been trying to have another child after Anna died.
Ruth worked at the hospital.
A private adoption was arranged.
Legal.
Consent valid.
No stolen baby.
No sinister exchange.
I was relieved.
Then angry.
Why hide it?
Diane believed telling me would make me feel “less Mercer.”
Richard agreed.
Caleb discovered the adoption by accident while searching Dad’s files.
He confronted Diane.
She begged him not to tell me until I was older.
He agreed.
Then the fire happened.
Another secret frozen in time.
Was Laura alive?
Yes.
In recovery for twenty-eight years.
Living in Oregon.
Married.
Two children.
I had half-siblings.
Real ones.
But nobody had secretly married me.
Small mercy.
I chose not to contact Laura immediately.
I had enough collapsing at once.
Then the biological father question arose.
Ruth knew.
Laura eventually told her.
His name:
Victor Reed.
The room went silent.
Mason’s father.
I stood so fast the chair fell.
If Victor was my biological father, Mason and I—
“No,” Ruth said quickly.
Daniel is not Victor’s biological son.
Everyone stopped.
Mason stared.
“What?”
Patricia became pregnant before she married Victor.
Biological father:
Stephen Reed, Victor’s older brother.
Stephen died in a workplace accident when Patricia was four months pregnant.
Victor later married her and raised Daniel as his own son.
So Mason and I were biologically related?
Victor and Stephen were brothers.
That made us first cousins genetically.
Too close.
My stomach turned.
Then Ruth said:
“Wait.”
She had never seen proof Victor was my father.
Only Laura’s claim.
DNA would settle it.
We tested.
Results:
Victor Reed was not my biological father.
I almost collapsed from relief.
Laura had been wrong—or had lied.
Why name Victor?
Because he paid her during pregnancy.
Not as father.
As intermediary.
He helped arrange the adoption.
For whom?
Richard Mercer.
My adoptive father.
Why would Richard use Victor?
Because Richard was my biological father.
DNA from archived medical samples confirmed it.
Richard had an affair with Laura.
I was his biological daughter.
Diane adopted me legally after Anna’s death.
So my parents were simultaneously biological father and adoptive mother.
And the family buried the truth because Richard did not want the affair exposed.
Mason and I were not siblings.
Not cousins.
Not biologically related at all.
The relief lasted approximately thirty seconds.
Then another realization arrived.
Diane knew I was the child of her husband’s affair.
Raised me.
Loved me.
Never told me.
And according to Caleb’s video:
May you like
“Dad says Mom knew.”
She had known from the beginning.
