Chapter 7 - What Caleb Knew About Mason

The letter was dated three days before the fire.
Before Mason became Mason.
When he was still Daniel Reed.
Caleb wrote:
Daniel jokes that if our fathers destroy each other, he’ll marry Emma someday and become a Mercer himself.
At thirteen, I had apparently been the annoying little sister Daniel barely noticed.
The “brother” joke began as teenage dark humor.
After the fire, Mason weaponized it.
Why?
“To scare me,” I said.
Mason looked ashamed.
“Yes.”
“You knew instantly it wasn’t true.”
“Yes.”
“You let me think I had married my biological brother.”
“For maybe ten seconds.”
Sarah stared at him.
“That's not the defense you think it is.”
He shut up.
Caleb’s letter continued.
I trust Daniel more than his father. But he has one problem: when he is scared, he tries to control everything around him.
I stopped.
Mason did too.
Fifteen-year-old Caleb had seen Mason clearly.
Then:
If he ever forgets that protecting someone and owning them are different things, don’t let him use me as an excuse.
I read that sentence twice.
Mason looked like he might be sick.
Caleb wasn’t speaking from prophecy.
He was describing the boy he knew.
The same pattern had grown into the man who kicked a table after I came home late.
Then the letter explained the blue room.
Caleb discovered Richard and Victor had secretly bought land using client information obtained through Mercer Architectural Group.
Some transactions involved zoning decisions not yet public.
Potential securities and public-corruption issues.
Caleb planned to report them.
But he didn’t trust police contacts connected to Dad.
So he split evidence.
One key to Daniel.
One to Diane.
If anything happened, both families would have to cooperate.
Smart.
Except they didn't.
Fear won.
Then the computer in the room powered on.
Old.
But functional.
Password hint:
EMMA’S WORST HABIT.
I almost smiled.
At fifteen, Caleb constantly complained that I stole his fries.
Password:
FRIES.
It worked.
Inside was one folder updated after the fire.
That meant someone returned later.
File date:
Four months after Caleb vanished.
Video.
Caleb appeared on-screen.
Burn scar visible along his arm.
Alive.
“Emma, if you ever see this, I’m sorry.”
I began crying.
Not quietly.
Fifteen years collapsed.
Caleb continued.
“I can't come home yet.”
Why?
Richard had told him something.
Something Caleb wanted to verify before exposing everything.
Then:
“Dad says Mom knew.”
I stopped crying.
Knew what?
Caleb looked exhausted.
“The money wasn't the first secret.”
He held up a document.
Adoption papers.
Name:
Emma Rose Mercer.
My name.
My date of birth.
Adoptive parents:
Richard and Diane Mercer.

I stared at the screen.
I was adopted.
