Chapter 1 - What Grandpa Told Her

Ethan stopped six feet from his father.

Behind him, Lily was still crying.

Not loudly anymore.

Those frightened little breaths were somehow worse.

Richard Whitmore stood beneath the chandelier with four guards separated on either side of him. He looked exactly as he had when Ethan was a child—straight-backed, perfectly dressed, impossible to read.

“Let’s see what he wants.”

Ethan's fists tightened.

“You told her to throw my daughter down the stairs?”

Richard’s expression did not change.

“No.”

Ethan glanced back at Lily.

She stood beside the staircase in her ivory-pink dress, trembling so badly that the pearl at her ear shook.

“Lily heard you.”

Richard looked toward his granddaughter.

For the first time, something disturbed his composure.

Not guilt.

Concern.

“Lily,” he said carefully. “What exactly did you hear?”

Eleanor pushed herself away from the wall.

Her cheek was red from Ethan’s slap.

“Don't interrogate the child.”

Ethan rounded on her.

“You don't get to protect her now.”

“I wasn't—”

“You had her by the hair.”

Eleanor went silent.

That silence condemned her more effectively than any denial.

Ethan crouched before Lily.

“You're safe. Tell Daddy what happened.”

Lily wiped her face.

“Grandma was mad.”

“Why?”

“I don't know.”

“What did Grandpa say?”

Lily looked toward Richard.

Fear returned immediately.

“I heard him tell Grandma…”

Her voice became tiny.

“Do it tonight.”

Ethan slowly stood.

Richard did not deny saying it.

Ethan saw that.

“So you did give her an order.”

“I gave Eleanor an instruction. It had nothing to do with Lily.”

“What instruction?”

Richard looked toward the guards.

Then toward the dining room.

“Not here.”

Ethan almost laughed.

“You think you still control where this conversation happens?”

“No.”

Richard's voice lowered.

“I think Lily has seen enough.”

That, at least, Ethan agreed with.

He lifted his daughter.

Lily clung instantly to him.

As Ethan carried her toward the sitting room, she whispered against his shoulder:

“Daddy?”

“Yes, sweetheart?”

“Grandma said something before she pushed me.”

Ethan stopped.

“What?”

Lily hesitated.

“She said Grandpa would finally love her again.”

Across the foyer, Eleanor’s face changed.

Richard turned toward his wife.

For the first time that night, the patriarch looked genuinely stunned.

“Eleanor?”

She said nothing.

Richard took one step toward her.

“What did you tell that child?”

Eleanor’s eyes filled with something Ethan had never seen there before.

Not remorse.

Terror.

Then one of Richard’s guards approached.

“Sir.”

He held out a phone.

“We found this upstairs.”

On the screen was a paused security recording.

The timestamp was twelve minutes before Lily was thrown.

Eleanor stood at the top of the staircase.

Someone stood beside her.

Richard.

Ethan stared.

His father had claimed Lily had nothing to do with the instruction he gave Eleanor.

But the security footage showed Richard pointing directly toward Lily’s bedroom door.

And Eleanor was nodding.
