Chapter 12 - Lucas Knew I Was the CEO

I confronted him that evening.
He admitted it.
Three days before the twins were born, Lucas found a confidential Hart Meridian briefing on my laptop.
I had left the screen unlocked during a contraction scare.
He saw:
Evelyn Hart — Founder & CEO.
He researched quietly.
Within hours he understood.
Eight-billion-dollar group.
Sterling & Co. majority ownership.
Mansion trust.
Cars.
Everything.
I stared at him.
“You knew when you threw us out.”
“Yes.”
That changed the emotional geometry completely.
“Then why did you do it?”
He looked broken.
“Because I thought the money proved Mom was right.”
I went cold.
He believed I had hidden wealth because I was manipulating him.
Testing him.
Controlling his career.
Owning his company without telling him.
When the fake DNA report arrived two days later, his fear fused with humiliation.
He convinced himself the entire marriage was constructed.
The twins might be another lie.
I had hidden Hart Meridian.
Why not paternity?
Faulty logic.
But human.
Then he said something I did not expect.
“When Mom told you to leave, I thought you'd reveal everything.”
“What?”
“I thought you would say the house was yours. The company was yours. That you could destroy us.”
I stared.
“And when I didn't?”
“That scared me more.”
He had watched me walk into snow without using wealth as a weapon.
For one brief second, he understood I had never stayed because I needed Sterling money.
But instead of stopping me—
he let me go.
That was the unforgivable part.
Not ignorance.
Choice.
“You knew the boys were ten days old.”
“Yes.”
“You knew I had just given birth.”
“Yes.”
“You knew there was a chance the report was false.”
“Yes.”
“And you let your mother put us outside anyway.”
His eyes filled.
“Yes.”
I stood.
“Then whether you knew I was CEO changes nothing.”
He nodded.
“I know.”
This time, no excuse followed.
Then he handed me his phone.
One unsent text.
Created three minutes after I left the mansion.
EVELYN COME BACK. I WAS WRONG.
Never sent.
Why?
“Pride.”
I almost laughed.
One word had cost him a family.
Then Lucas offered something.
Full resignation from Sterling & Co.
Waiver of any claim against my property.
Cooperation with every investigation.
And temporary suspension of marital financial rights pending divorce proceedings.
“Are you asking me not to divorce you?”
“No.”
That surprised me.
He continued:
“I want you to make that decision without me bargaining.”
For the first time in weeks, he sounded like the man I once loved.
Too late?
Maybe.
But real.
Then Sophie agreed to speak to Lucas.
Video only.
She asked him:
“Did Dad know about me?”
“Yes.”
“Did he want me?”
“Yes.”
“Did Mom—Margot—hate me?”
Lucas answered:
“I don't know.”
Good.
No invented comfort.
Sophie nodded.
Then:
“I don't want Sterling money if it comes with all this.”
Lucas smiled sadly.
“That's probably why you should have some.”
She almost smiled.
Then Sophie asked:
“Are the twins really yours?”
Lucas laughed for the first time in days.
“Yes.”
“Then you’re an idiot.”
“Yes.”
I liked her.
Then Gideon arrived with news.
The Preservation Trust audit found one unexplained distribution.
$24 million.
Recipient:
Hart Children's Foundation.
My foundation.
I had never authorized it.
Someone had been moving Sterling trust money into my charity for years.
May you like
Why?
To make it appear I was secretly stealing from the Sterling family.
