Chapter 10 - The Sister My Father Never Told Me About

Her name was Claire Hart.

Age thirty-four.

My father's daughter from a relationship before he married my mother.

I had been told Dad never had children before me.

False.

Claire's mother moved to France when Claire was three.

Richard paid support.

Visited sporadically.

Then contact faded.

Claire grew up knowing she had a younger half-sister.

Me.

I grew up knowing nothing.

Why did Dad create shares for her?

Guilt.

Simple.

He wanted Claire to benefit if my design business succeeded using family money.

But he never told me because he feared I would feel my work was not fully mine.

Again.

A parent manipulating reality in the name of protection.

Claire herself had no idea the shares existed.

Daniel held them in trust.

When Hart Meridian’s value exploded, he considered telling us.

Then Richard died.

Daniel hesitated.

Years passed.

Same pattern.

I contacted Claire carefully.

Video call first.

She laughed when she saw me.

“You have Dad’s eyebrows.”

Apparently every family had one required line.

Claire was a museum curator in Lyon.

No interest in corporate control.

When told about the shares, she went silent.

“How much?”

“Potentially around five hundred sixty million.”

She laughed.

Then thought I was joking.

She did not demand it.

She asked:

“Did you build the company?”

“Yes.”

“Then why would half a billion belong to me?”

“Because Dad created the shares.”

“That doesn't mean I earned them.”

I respected her instantly.

Lawyers would resolve what she legally owned.

But emotionally, she wasn't coming for my empire.

Good.

Then Claire mentioned something.

Richard had written to her about Lucas.

Years before Lucas and I met.

Why?

Richard and Daniel both knew Margot.

Their families had intersected through business.

Richard once wrote:

Margot's boy is not a bad man. He is a boy raised to believe obedience is loyalty.

I stared.

My father knew Lucas?

Not personally.

He knew of him.

Then Claire showed me another letter.

Richard:

If Evelyn ever meets him, I hope she is smarter than I was about confusing silence with peace.

What did that mean?

My father had once been in business with Edwin Sterling.

Hart family financing helped rescue Sterling assets decades earlier.

Edwin later refused repayment on certain terms.

The families became enemies.

Yet years later I married Edwin’s son without knowing any of it.

Was our meeting engineered on both sides?

Marian engineered Lucas’s presence.

My event team?

Gideon reviewed archives.

One donor insisted Sterling & Co. receive invitations.

Donor:

Richard Hart Foundation.

My dead father's foundation had put Lucas in the room where we met.

Richard died before the gala.

But invitations had been planned months earlier.

My father had created the possibility.

Marian exploited it.

Two families quietly moving pieces.

Then Lucas and I made actual choices inside that setup.

I hated that.

But perhaps that was adulthood:

discovering the stage was built by other people and deciding what parts of the performance were still yours.

Then Claire asked:

“Do you still love him?”

I looked through the medical-suite window.

Lucas sat alone down the hallway.

“I don't know.”

Claire nodded.

“Good answer.”

Then Gideon entered.

Margot had disappeared.

Not fled the country.

Left the mansion.

Security showed her packing one small bag.

She did not take jewelry.

Cash.

Passport.

Only one item:

Edwin Sterling’s old family ledger.

May you like

Why?

Because according to Sophie, the ledger contained proof that the Preservation Trust was never Edwin’s to begin with.
