Chapter 7 - Hale’s Signature
Hale had approved Harbor Response.
That was not secret.
What he had never disclosed was why.
In 2017, military faced major delays integrating casualty tracking across several temporary operations.
Harbor Response offered credential escrow system allowing medical logistics to continue if command networks failed.
Hale supported pilot.
Legal reviewed it.
Procurement approved it.
No secret personal investment.
No kickback.
No hidden ownership.
But Hale had ignored one warning.
Caleb Ross submitted pre-deployment memo saying emergency certificate could be combined with contractor reset privileges to imitate senior administrative authorization.
Hale’s staff classified risk as unlikely.
Hale signed deployment waiver.
Two years later, exact weakness was exploited.
Rachel stared at him.
“You knew system could do this.”
“I knew Ross believed it could.”
“And you signed anyway.”
“Yes.”
“Then when our records changed?”
“I was told changes were part protected witness procedure.”
“You didn't verify?”
“No.”
Hale’s composure cracked.
“I should have.”
That was his failure.
Not mastermind.
Negligent confidence.
Rachel understood unknown voice now.
“Hale was never in charge” meant his identity had been technologically borrowed while he assumed controls worked.
But Evelyn Shaw?
Investigators found her within hours at sister’s house.
She had not fled country.
She left hotel because Ross warned her she might be blamed.
Shaw agreed interview with attorney.
She denied using Mason card.
Logs showed reset action from her administrator profile.
But profile itself could be delegated.
She produced payroll schedules.
On night of explosion she was in Washington.
Could remotely reset? Yes.
Did she?
“No.”
Who else knew her override?
Thomas Vane.
Harbor Response founder and chief systems architect.
Dead.
Again.
But Shaw explained something overlooked.
Vane’s administrator access was not personal.
Company maintained break-glass account under his name:
TVANE-ROOT.
After his death it should have been disabled.
It wasn't.
Rachel thought of gala invitation under Vane’s name.
Someone repeatedly used dead founder as mask.
Not because Vane alive.
Because his identity remained convenient credential.
Then Node Four showed reset sequence:
ESHAW-ADMIN requested.
TVANE-ROOT approved.
MREED-ADMIN activated.
NHALE-DELEGATE signed.
A chain designed to look legitimate.
Who controlled root account?
System administrators.
One name appeared repeatedly in 2019 access schedule:
GABRIEL NORTH.
Rachel knew it.
Everyone in Raven Twelve did.
Gabe North was Harbor Response field systems manager.
Friendly.
Quiet.
He fixed printers, replaced tablets and joked that nobody remembered IT until something broke.
He had been at depot hours before explosion.
Current records said North resigned in 2020.
Brooks found address.
Vacant.
Tax records showed no employment after 2021.
No death certificate.
No passport departure.
No obvious life.
Rachel remembered one more thing.
After she woke from surgery, someone left dog tag beside bed.
Not hers.
Marcus Dean’s.
Nurse said “Mr. North” delivered it.
Rachel had assumed another soldier.
Now she realized Gabe had visited hospital after four names were already being removed.
Why give her tag?
Warning?
Threat?
Then Ross contacted Brooks voluntarily.
He would surrender for gala trespass/identity deception.
Before doing so he sent one sentence:
GABRIEL NORTH DID NOT ERASE RAVEN FOUR.
Rachel frowned.
If not North, why point toward his credentials?
