Chapter 10 - Gabriel North
Gabriel North was alive.
He had not disappeared because he was hiding from military.
He had changed name legally after harassment and moved to rural Oregon.
Current name:
Gabriel Norris.
Not dramatic false identity.
A court-approved surname change after marriage, followed by divorce.
Search systems simply had not connected records because investigators initially used outdated contractor identifiers.
Brooks contacted him.
North agreed video interview.
Rachel recognized him instantly.
Older.
Bearded.
But same careful eyes.
“Why didn't you find me?” Rachel asked.
“I tried.”
He sent Rachel certified letter in 2020.
It was returned.
Address was rehabilitation facility Rachel had already left.
He emailed.
Account deactivated during medical retirement transition.
He contacted Mason.
Mason never received message because Harbor contractor spam filter quarantined it.
North then submitted recovery data to procurement inquiry.
He received legal threat bearing Hale’s forged signature.
He panicked.
He had copied data in violation of contractor rules, even though purpose whistleblowing.
Attorney advised preserve evidence but stop direct outreach.
He did.
Ross later found him.
Together they verified Node Four still existed.
Why not immediately tell Rachel now?
North feared dragging her into investigation without consent.
Ross disagreed.
Ross sent dog tags.
Where did tags come from?
They were commemorative duplicates Raven Twelve members had made after deployment.
Not official issued identification tags.
North kept set as evidence of full roster.
He stamped Harbor-4 on four altered names years later to mark records affected.
That solved money detail from gala.
The dog tags themselves were not secret code from military.
They were North’s physical reminder of names administrative systems had detached.
Why eleven tags, not twelve?
Rachel asked.
North looked surprised.
“I sent twelve.”
Rachel froze.
Envelope contained eleven.
Whose tag missing?
Mason Reed.
North’s set included Mason because he was unit liaison.
Rachel had assumed Mason absent intentionally.
Someone intercepted package and removed his tag.
Postal tracking showed envelope weight changed between Oregon acceptance and Rachel delivery?
Hard to establish.
But photograph North took before shipping showed twelve tags.
Mason’s definitely included.
Who removed it?
Could be mundane tampering after delivery?
Building camera showed package placed outside Rachel door for fourteen minutes.
One person approached.
Rachel’s neighbor, retired Navy medic Frank Ellis.
He picked package up, examined address, then put it back.
Frank denied opening.
Camera angle showed no obvious tear.
Investigators found envelope resealed along side.
Frank voluntarily provided fingerprints.
His prints on exterior.
Not interior.
Unknown partial inside.
Then Rachel remembered package had been slightly open.
Could have happened shipping.
Missing tag might not be deliberate.
Brooks refused build conspiracy from absence.
They focused evidence.
Sloan was suspended from advisory positions and investigated.
Vane was dead, so responsibility historical.
Harbor successor cooperated.
Hale requested independent review of his own negligence.
Mason faced assault charges/disciplinary consequences from gala plus review of 2019 failures.
Rachel did not forgive him because he had also been manipulated.
He had attacked her.
Both truths could coexist.
Then North asked Rachel:
“Did Ross tell you why he chose gala?”
“To force attention.”
“That's half.”
“What’s other half?”
North displayed seating chart.

Thomas Vane invitation.
Ross had not created it.
He merely discovered dormant Vane credential had already been activated.
Someone else intended attend gala under Vane’s name.
Ross hijacked invitation.
Rachel stared.
“So unknown man was Ross.”
“Yes.”
“But invitation wasn't his plan.”
“No.”
“Who activated dead man’s invitation?”
North answered:
“That’s what frightened him enough to send you tags.”

Someone had used Thomas Vane’s dormant donor identity before Ross decided impersonate him.
And activation came from inside gala planning office.
