Chapter 8 - Ryan Stole the Evidence Before Someone Used Him to Replace It
Ryan’s confession made him look worse and more credible at the same time.
He stole the original memory card.
That was evidence tampering and potentially part of probate misconduct.
He admitted it because forensics had cornered him.
Why take it?
He believed Walter had recorded discussion of the $240,000 loan.
Ryan had repeatedly told family members Walter forgave that debt orally. The estate documents treated it as outstanding.
If the video contained Walter confirming repayment was still expected, Ryan’s inheritance shrank.
So he removed the card.
“What did you do with it?” Dean asked.
Ryan said he hid it in his workshop.
Two days later, it was gone.
Who knew?
Only one person.
His wife, Lauren.
Lauren Hale had barely appeared in the family conflict until then. She stayed away from probate meetings, told everyone she wanted no inheritance drama, and repeatedly encouraged Ryan to “let the lawyers handle it.”
That made her seem reasonable.
Sometimes reasonable people are reasonable.
Sometimes they simply understand the value of invisibility.
Lauren admitted finding the card in Ryan’s workshop.
She claimed she gave it to Caroline because she believed family evidence belonged with Walter’s widow.
Caroline denied receiving it.
Then investigators checked Lauren’s vehicle records.
She drove to Caroline’s house the day the card disappeared.
Stayed nineteen minutes.
Still not proof.
Lauren’s phone had an image taken that afternoon.
A photograph of Walter’s memory card beside a yellow legal pad.
Zoomed in, one handwritten line was visible:
Need clean version before Ryan sees trust explanation.
Whose handwriting?
Not Lauren’s.
Not Caroline’s.
Emily’s.
Emily stared at the photo during her second interview and admitted the note was hers.
But she said “clean version” did not mean fake.
She claimed Caroline wanted a shorter copy of Walter’s full video for family viewing because the nineteen-minute original contained personal medical discussion and references to debts.
That explanation was plausible.
Then Emily admitted she had begun editing the recording.
There it was.
But not the fake version found in Ryan’s tool.
She created a legitimate shortened extract.
Seven minutes.
With clear title cards indicating excerpts.
She said Caroline later rejected it because Thomas warned them not to create unofficial estate materials at all.
The project was abandoned.
Yet someone later used the same editing software and source library to produce the fake two-minute recording.
Who had access to Emily’s project?
Emily.
Caroline.
Lauren.
And, after borrowing Emily’s laptop for a tax issue, Daniel.
Again Daniel’s name returned.
Again evidence needed context.
The timestamps cleared him quickly. The fraudulent project was created while Daniel and I were at a prenatal appointment together.
Lauren, however, had no such alibi.
Phone location placed her at home.
Her laptop connected remotely to Emily’s accounting server at 2:18 p.m.
The fake video was exported at 2:36.
Lauren’s attorney said remote login did not prove she made the file.
Correct.
Then forensic logs found her username.
Still not absolute proof—the credentials could be shared.
Then one deleted message recovered from Lauren’s phone changed everything.
To an unsaved number:
I made the version he needs. Once Ryan believes Nora stole his inheritance, he’ll do the rest himself.
I felt physically sick reading it.
Not because Lauren had attacked me directly.
Because she had predicted Ryan would.
She knew his anger.
Fed it.
Pointed it.
Then apparently stepped back.
But who was the unsaved recipient?
The number belonged to a prepaid phone.

Cliffhanger: Lauren created the fake inheritance video to inflame Ryan against Nora—but the burner phone receiving her updates had been purchased with Caroline’s card, suggesting Ryan’s wife and mother may have been coordinating behind both brothers’ backs.
