Chapter 4 - Caroline Had Been Playing Peacemaker Too Perfectly

Caroline arrived at the sheriff’s office wearing pearls.

That detail should not matter.

It does.

Some memories survive because they are important. Others survive because the brain needs something ordinary to hold while reality becomes unbearable.

Her pearls were perfectly straight when Dean asked when she had last seen Walter’s memory card.

“I don’t remember.”

Dean waited.

Caroline adjusted one pearl near her collarbone.

“It was an upsetting time.”

“When did you learn the card was missing?”

“After Thomas called.”

Thomas Bell was Walter’s estate attorney.

“Did you enter Walter’s study after his death?”

“Of course. I lived there.”

“Did you remove digital storage from the camera?”

“No.”

“Did you know Ryan believed the video supported a larger inheritance for him?”

Her expression changed by perhaps half a degree.

“Ryan believes many things.”

That was Caroline’s talent.

She could insult a person while sounding like she was discussing weather.

Then Dean asked whether she had ever watched the original recording.

“Yes.”

My pulse quickened.

“What did Walter say?”

Caroline looked down.

“That he wanted the written estate plan followed.”

Nothing more?

She claimed she could not remember exact words.

Dean had heard enough evasive family answers to know when precision disappeared selectively.

But he did not accuse her.

Evidence first.

Then the estate attorney supplied his contemporaneous notes.

Walter’s actual video statement had covered three disputed subjects.

First, the south acreage. Walter said Ryan had asked for it, but he intentionally placed it into a shared family land trust because Ryan had repeatedly used property as collateral for risky business borrowing.

Second, Daniel’s income trust. Walter created it not because Daniel was favored, but because Daniel had managed several rental properties without compensation while Walter was ill.

Third, me.

Walter said:

“Nora’s name should remain on the lake parcel because she contributed the money that cleared its tax lien. Do not let anyone call her ownership charity.”

I cried when Thomas read that to me.

The fake edited video had transformed Walter’s defense of me into condemnation.

Someone had not merely tried to move assets.

They had rewritten a dead man’s judgment.

Then forensic investigators found the source clips used in the edited version.

They had been taken from ordinary family videos.

Walter saying “Ryan.”

Walter saying “south acreage.”

Walter saying “Daniel has received help.”

Walter saying my name in another conversation.

The fake video was a crude but carefully assembled deception.

Who created it?

The editing software project had been deleted from a laptop.

Recovered account identifier:

CHale_Admin.

Caroline Hale.

Daniel stared at the report.

“No.”

Dean remained calm.

“An account name is not proof she was the operator.”

Caroline’s laptop was used by several family members because it contained Walter’s old bookkeeping software.

Including Ryan.

Including Daniel.

Including Caroline’s niece Emily.

So the mystery widened.

Then the original inheritance list itself showed something else.

The version Ryan brought to my house was not identical to the version filed by Thomas.

Three asset descriptions had been altered.

Not amounts.

Descriptions.

Enough to make certain properties sound individually owned instead of trust-controlled.

Whoever changed the list wanted Ryan to believe the written estate plan had cheated him even more than it actually had.

Maybe Ryan was attacker and victim of manipulation at the same time.

That possibility did not excuse what he did to me.

But it changed the motive.

Then Dean found a message on Ryan’s phone.

From an unsaved number:

She knows the list is false. Make her admit where the real card is.

May you like

The message was sent forty minutes before Ryan arrived at my house.

Cliffhanger: Someone had told Ryan that Nora was secretly hiding the original memory card—meaning the attack may have been triggered by a lie planted specifically to send him after her.
