Chapter 7 - The Name My Mother Removed

My birth certificate named Michael Evans as my father.

He died when I was three.

That was the story.

Sofia Moretti claimed it was false.

I wanted proof.

Giovanni wanted answers.

Neither of us trusted the other enough to pretend we were comfortable.

Sofia flew to New York.

She arrived without jewelry, entourage or apology.

The first thing she did was look at me.

“You have Margaret’s eyes.”

“The last person who said something sentimental before lying to me was Rebecca Ashford.”

Sofia almost smiled.

“Good.”

She told us Ashford Biotech had tested an experimental cancer compound twenty-eight years earlier.

Initial results were promising.

Then severe complications appeared.

Executives concealed them to preserve funding.

Lorenzo Moretti financed expansion.

Rebecca handled legal settlements.

But someone else ran the science.

“Who?”

Sofia looked at me.

“Dr. Alexander Ashford.”

Rebecca’s husband.

Tyler’s father.

Alexander had supposedly died fifteen years earlier.

Another polished Ashford tragedy.

“What does this have to do with me?”

“Margaret became pregnant while working there.”

My hands went cold.

“No.”

Sofia placed an envelope on the desk.

A photograph.

Mom and Alexander.

Not romantic.

They were arguing outside a laboratory.

On the back:

Margaret confronts Alexander about Hannah.

“What about me?”

“Your mother discovered that blood samples from employees had been used without proper authorization.”

My blood.

My mother’s blood.

The trial was not merely about patients.

It involved families.

Genetic screening.

Potential inherited treatment responses.

“You said she lied about my father.”

Sofia looked uncomfortable.

“Because Margaret herself wasn’t sure.”

I stood.

“Stop.”

“Hannah—”

“Stop turning my mother into part of some laboratory mystery.”

I walked out.

Giovanni followed but stayed several feet behind.

“Don’t.”

“I’m not stopping you.”

“Then why follow me?”

“Because you’re angry enough to walk into traffic.”

I hated that he was right.

My phone rang.

Unknown number.

Mom.

“Hannah?”

“Where are you?”

“Safe.”

“You disappeared from a cancer ward!”

“I needed to reach someone before Rebecca did.”

“Who?”

“Alexander.”

I stopped walking.

“He’s alive?”

“Yes.”

“Where?”

Mom began crying.

“Hannah, Michael Evans raised you. He loved you. Never let anyone take that from you.”

“Mom.”

“But biologically…”

My throat closed.

“Say it.”

“I don’t know.”

“You don’t know?”

“Because Alexander falsified the employee testing. He switched samples.”

“Why?”

“I discovered something about Tyler.”

“What?”

Before she answered, a man spoke in the background.

“Margaret.”

Mom gasped.

The call disconnected.

Giovanni was already dialing Franco.

But I had recognized the voice.

I had heard it only once.

At the Ashford mansion.

Rebecca’s elderly family physician.

Dr. Alexander Hale.

The man who had spent the entire gala sitting three chairs away from Rebecca.

May you like

Alexander Ashford had never died.

He had simply changed his last name.
