Chapter 9 - The Blue Medicine

Eleanor denied it.

This time Ethan believed she might be telling the truth.

Not because he trusted her.

Because her confusion looked real.

“What blue medicine?”

Lily described a small cobalt bottle.

A woman poured drops into Maria’s tea.

“Who?”

Lily lowered her eyes.

“The lady.”

“What lady?”

“The one who looks like Mommy Anna.”

Maria’s face drained of color.

Anna was dead.

Ethan did not tell Lily that.

“Where did you see her?”

“In Mommy’s room.”

“When?”

“Nighttime.”

Lily had awakened and seen a woman beside Maria’s bed.

Long brown hair.

Gray coat.

She whispered to Maria.

Then added drops to a cup.

Lily asked who she was.

The woman crouched and said:

“I'm a friend of Anna’s. Don't tell Mrs. Cole or she'll make me leave.”

There it was.

“She said I can’t tell.”

Not Eleanor.

The entire hallway confrontation had pointed Ethan toward the wrong woman.

Eleanor had looked guilty because she was hiding the adoption and DNA investigation.

But Lily’s secret concerned someone else.

Security footage showed a woman entering through the service entrance twice.

She used Maria’s access code.

Maria had not given it to anyone.

The woman’s face was obscured.

But her vehicle was captured outside.

Registered to:

Victoria Reed.

Ethan confronted her.

Victoria looked stunned.

“My car was stolen three weeks ago.”

Convenient.

Police report confirmed it.

Reported stolen before Maria became sick.

Someone wanted investigators to find Victoria.

Again, evidence designed to accuse the easiest suspect.

Then Maria remembered receiving messages.

Anonymous.

Your sister didn't die by accident.

She deleted them because she assumed cruelty.

Now police recovered them.

The sender claimed Anna’s car crash had been staged.

Maria began crying.

“She lost control in the rain.”

Maybe.

The original crash report showed brake failure.

Investigators called it mechanical.

But photographs showed the brake line had been recently serviced.

By a garage.

Owner:

Thomas Whitmore’s younger brother.

David.

Anna’s uncle.

Lily’s biological great-uncle.

David had inherited Thomas’s remaining estate.

If Lily’s genetic identity became public, she could potentially challenge portions of the Whitmore inheritance.

Financial motive.

Police found David.

He denied harming Anna.

He also denied entering the mansion.

Then voluntarily provided his phone.

No evidence.

He had received the same anonymous messages.

Someone was baiting every branch of the family.

Ethan realized the pattern.

The blue folder pointed at Eleanor.

The stolen car pointed at Victoria.

The brake records pointed at David.

Each clue contained truth.

Each truth was framed to create a larger false conclusion.

Who benefited from everyone accusing one another?

Noah examined the old fertility records.

One name appeared repeatedly.

A technician who worked for Malcolm Reed.

Then later worked for Margaret’s private physician.

Then, astonishingly, served as the medical consultant who signed Anna’s death report after the crash.

Dr. Celeste Warren.

Alive.

Fifty-six.

And when Ethan showed Lily her photograph—

the little girl immediately whispered:

“That’s the lady.”
