Chapter 5 - The Father Who Wasn't Ethan
The discovery hurt Ethan in a way he had not expected.
For four years Lily had been Maria’s child in his mind.
Then, for one hour, he had wondered whether she might somehow be his.
Now he knew something stranger.
Lily was Sophie’s daughter.
The daughter Sophie never lived to meet.
Yet Ethan was not her father.
He sat alone in the mansion library long after Eleanor left.
Memories returned with cruel precision.
Sophie laughing in a hospital bed.
Sophie talking about frozen embryos.
Sophie squeezing his hand after another round of chemotherapy.
“If I don't make it, don't turn your whole life into a graveyard.”
He had promised.
Then she died.
He believed their future died with her.
Apparently part of hers had not.
Maria agreed to an independent DNA test.
No secrecy.
No stolen samples.
Results confirmed:
Anna was not Lily’s genetic mother.
Sophie Reed was.
Maria cried when she learned.
Not because Lily became less hers.
Because Anna had died carrying someone else’s child without ever explaining why.
Then Ethan asked the obvious question.
“Who is Lily’s biological father?”
The embryo-transfer record should contain it.
It did not.
The donor code had been manually removed.
The clinic director at the time was Dr. Malcolm Reed.
Sophie’s father.
Ethan remembered him immediately.
Cold.
Brilliant.
Controlling.
He had never approved of Ethan.
Malcolm died three years after Sophie.
His clinic records went to Margaret Cole.
Another dead person holding a piece of the answer.
Noah—Ethan’s younger brother—helped search Margaret’s archived storage.
They found Sophie’s fertility file.
Inside was an embryo inventory.
Six embryos had been created.
Five listed:
SOPHIE REED / ETHAN COLE.
One was different.
Embryo 6:
SOPHIE REED / DONOR R-17.
Ethan stared.
Sophie had created an embryo with another man’s genetic material.
Why?
Was it before Ethan?
During their relationship?
Medical necessity?
The date was three months before her diagnosis.
Before fertility became urgent.
Ethan felt the old pain changing shape.
Then Noah noticed a handwritten note from Sophie:
Do not implant #6. Dad insists it stays stored until I decide what to do.
That changed everything.
Sophie had not intended for Embryo 6 to become a child.
Someone implanted it into Anna years after Sophie died.
Margaret?
Dr. Reed?
Anna herself?
Eleanor?
Then Maria remembered something.
Anna received money during her pregnancy.
Monthly transfers.
Not from Margaret.
From a charitable foundation.
THE REED CHILDREN'S TRUST.
Sophie’s family foundation.
The trust had been dissolved after Malcolm Reed’s death.
But one trustee remained alive.
Victoria Reed.
Sophie’s older sister.
Ethan had not spoken to Victoria in seven years.
When investigators contacted her, Victoria did not sound surprised.
“Lily?”
Ethan’s skin went cold.
“You know her name?”
